Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

All eyes are on a weather system slated for Sunday into Monday. This one could bring just enough snow to get some lifts going, and it’ll definitely bring enough snow for XC grooming. After Monday, temps look plenty cool, even perhaps very cold, but the moisture picture is a bit up in the air still depending on which model and which ensemble members you peruse. In other words… plenty of uncertainty in the long-term forecast. Meadows will be ending uphill traffic for sure on Monday and perhaps on Sunday, so plan on going elsewhere if you want to earn your turns.

Friday, however, starts out quite warm on the mountain. It’ll end plenty cold! The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast in the afternoon. That’ll be rain. It switches to snow around sunset. Just 0.1” WE is forecast, for just an inch of new snow. Wind: WSW 20-25 in the morning, W 30 early afternoon, NW 25-35 in the evening, and N 10-15 overnight.

Saturday looks sunny to start, cloudy later, and picks up just a few flurries overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 4500′ in the evening, and 3500′ after midnight. Wind: N 10-15 early becoming W 20 in the afternoon and building to W 55 after midnight.

Sunday looks very snowy with a strong orographic component to this system. The snow level will be 3500′ early, but it will drop to 1000′ in the afternoon and as low as 500′ overnight. About 0.4” WE is forecast during the day. Taking into account the wind, we could actually see 4-7” of snow. Overnight, 0.8” WE is forecast. Again, there will be strong orographic aid to the snow, and we could see 8-12” new. Wind: W 55 early, WNW 30-40 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and NW 20-30 after midnight.

Monday starts off with a wee bit of snow and turns clear. The snow level will be 500-1000′ early and will fall (depending on the model) as low as 0′ in the evening under clear sky. About 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning, for 2-3” of dry powder. Wind: NW 20-30 early, WNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. Ski season is almost upon us! Fingers crossed for all three resorts!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Out on the trails, we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
