Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind is forecast for both days of [all the windsports now] Kiteboard 4 Cancer. Remember that launching and landing at the Event Site is restricted to event participants. All folks are welcome to come hang out and enjoy the scene. And don’t forget to make a donation to support the good work done by KB4C. Next week’s forecast improved in the latest model run: we’ll have one day of easterlies (Monday) followed by a quick return to strong westerlies. Fingers crossed this timing holds in the upcoming model runs!

Saturday brings a bit of weather dynamics – front approaching offshore, trough moving inland. Even if that’s nonsense to you, know that it’ll make the wind a little less reliable than on your Classic Gorge Day. Morning westerlies build from “light” to 13-16 between Stevenson and Mosier by late morning. Westerlies continue to build through the day. By early afternoon, expect 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 15-18 at Rufus. Afternoon: gusty 24-27 from Hood River to Rufus with 18-22 at Arlington and gusty 19-23 between Stevenson and Swell. Viento and Stevenson are likely to overperform. Swell may underperform. All-in-all, it’ll be a good day on the river despite the nearly-nothing start! River flow readings are 160-230kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

Sunday starts with light westerlies, less than 10mph. It’ll take quite a while for that to change. Early afternoon brings 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier. Mid-afternoon: 20-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 at Avery. High temp: 81F.

Easterlies make a brief showing on Monday as heat settles in across the PNW. You’ll find E 15-20 between Rooster and Viento until 2pm or so. After that: 10mph or so. Easterlies pick up to 5mph from Hood River eastward in the afternoon. High temp: 92F.

Models have been trending faster and faster in cooling down the west side. Yesterday’s run had the cooldown on Tuesday evening. Now models suggest the marine influence will return to the Willy Valley mid-morning Tuesday. With that timing, we have this forecast: light wind to start building to 27-31+ in the afternoon all through the Gorge. Wednesday: nuking dawn patrol at Swell followed by 25-28ish for the rest of the day, possibly disrupted by an approaching system in the afternoon. Westerlies of some sort (generally not the “classic Gorge setup” sort) continue through the week.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is Kiteboard for Cancer at the Hood River Event Site. The Oregon 12/24 hour mountain bike race takes place in Bend this weekend.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
