Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Seems like the Northwest is finally starting to settle down into what we’d call “normal” summer weather. Offshore high pressure sticks around between now and a good long while from now. That should keep the westerlies powering through the Gorge. A trough of low pressure sits over the coast and inland areas today, and high pressure is 1024mb out around 135W. Morning westerlies were all over the map, as is to be expected with cool temps and scattered showers.

Saturday started with partly cloudy sky in Hood River with gradients of .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). Give it a couple hours, and you’ll find 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus (too much current) with 14-17 to the west of Mosier and east of Rufus. But wait! There’s more – afternoon westerlies pick up to 24-27 from Viento to Rufus with 14-17 at Stevenson and 15-28 near Arlington. If the clouds don’t fully dissipate near Hood River, the wind could be lighter than expected from there westward. River flow is 370-436kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 65F.

Sunday brings the high pressure a bit closer and tilts it a bit more positively. That send part is probably irrelevant with so much current near Rufus, but normally that would create gusty conditions. The day starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River, 18-22 from Mosier to Rufus, and 12-15 east of Rufus to Arlington. You’ll need to wait for early afternoon for the wind to really get going. When it does, you’ll find 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus with light westerlies east of Rufus. Models suggest the wind will climb a bit more mid to late afternoon: 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus with 20-23 near Arlington. High temp: 65F.

Looking on to Monday, we have our first fully sunny day in a while. Westerlies respond by maxing out at 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light wind in the eastern Gorge. Tuesday currently has a forecast of light and variable wind, but then it’s back to westerlies for the rest of the week, more likely than not. Finally. Summer. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Looking at today,, we have the Bend Short Track Series race, 12 Hours of Post Canyon, the Alpine Epic Race (Oakridge), the annual summer solstice party at Illumination Saddle, the Pray for Wind Party at Kickstand, the Central Gorge Master Gardeners Tour, the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, and Six Hours of Mt. Hood MTB race.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
