Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s perfect packed powder on the mountain today, and the sun will come out by the afternoon. You’ll find sunshine all day on Friday with warmer temps, probably warm enough to diminish the snow quality in the afternoon. Early sunshine on Saturday gives way to clouds midday and snow overnight. Snow continues through Sunday. By Monday, we have strong signals in the models of warmer, wetter weather. The details are unclear, but the general picture is for wet weather (rain at times, perhaps some snow at times) through next Friday.

For Thursday, however, it will not be wet. It will be cold and dry. Flurries early give way to sunshine by the afternoon. The snow level will be 0′ all day with temps on the slopes in the teens. Just a trace of snow will fall. Wind: NW 15-20 early, N 5-15 in the afternoon, and SE 10-20 overnight. A few easterly orographic flurries could fall overnight.

Friday starts mostly clear and stays sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 500-1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ (with temps at 5000′ at 32F) overnight. No precip. Wind: SE 10-20 early, S 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Saturday starts clear and quickly turns high overcast. The timing looks good for a lovely sunrise. Clouds stick around all day, and snow starts just after midnight. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight for an inch of new. Depending on the timing of this system, that could change.

The general picture is for half a foot of snow or so on Sunday with the snow level around 4000′. Temps warm on Monday. The GFS calls for about 4” rain in that 24 hour period, but the ECMWF is less robust. We’ll just have to wait and see. Models hint at the weather being too warm for snow at 5000′ through Thursday, but again, we’ll need to watch closely for exact snow levels and precipitation amounts. Either way, we sure do need the lowland rain, so we’ll celebrate what comes!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strange things are happening with the wind this morning, but we’ll be back to easterlies this afternoon. For the early hours, you’ll find W 15-20 between Viento and Hood River with 5-10 to the west. East of Mosier, the wind will be E 5-10 to start the day. Easterlies surge back in this afternoon all through the Gorge – you’ll find 10mph from Rooster to Arlington. River flow is 153kcfs, river temp is 37F, and high temp forecast is 40F. Friday starts with E 35-40 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and light wind east of Hood River. Afternoon forecast is 30-35 at Rooster, 25-30 at Stevenson, 20-25 at Viento, and 10mph from Hood River to the east. Saturday: 40-50 to start the day at Rooster with 30-35 in the afternoon. East of Hood River, it’ll be E 5mph to start and calm in the afternoon.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Snow is falling to the east and west of Hood River, but it should stay clear here. Temps will be near 30 early and in the upper 30’s later. Light west wind this morning. Light easterlies later. No rainbows. Friday will be clear all day. Temps will be near 20 early and in the upper 30’s to low 40’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday starts clear and quickly turns cloudy. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Snow overnight. Light easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE THAW: It rained enough this week that sub-freezing overnight temps and daytime sunshine will render the trails susceptible to damage. Please, just don’t. You can take a week off riding while the temps moderate. Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
