Gorge Wind Forecast

Wednesday’s starting off under the influence of some elevated instability and high clouds. The system causing this moves east as the day goes on, and our standard summer setup returns to drive strong westerlies. West wind sticks around in some form or another through the weekend, although Friday’s looking rather lackluster unless you catch the Dawn Patrol session.

The GOLU / GOLATR (go outside look up / go outside look at the river) forecast this morning has high clouds from Hood River eastward and low clouds west of Underwood. Gradients are impressive: 0.19 (pdx-dls) and 0.12 (dls-psc). This indicates you’ll have pretty good luck just about anywhere today; early winds agree! 30-35 east of Rufus to start the day, 25-28 from Viento to Swell, and 17-20 pretty much everywhere else. “Persistence” is the word of the day. Westerlies build to 28-33 from Viento to Mosier with 30-35 from Lyle to Arlington by late morning or early afternoon. Stevenson builds from 14-17 this morning to 24-27 after the clouds burn off. If Threemile is your place, you’ll find 25-28 there. Don’t wait for the executive session if you have another option; models suggest the wind will decrease after 5pm, dropping back to 16-19 west of Lyle and 24-28 east of there. River flow is 124kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 78F for Hood River and 90F for Arlington.

A weak system swings through early on Thursday and brings back the marine layer, although it will be less deep and less persistent than Wednesday’s. Westerlies start at 19-23 from Viento to Swell, and likely at Mosier too. Hood River will be a bit less early, perhaps 10-13. Other locations: 8-11 to start the day. Midday wind fills in at 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 10-13 at Avery and 5-10 east of there. Afternoon: 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus with 17-20 at Stevenson and 14-17 from Viento to Hood River. High temp: 83F.

Weak high pressure builds inland on Friday and knocks the wind speeds down. The day starts with 19-23 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 west of there to Stevenson and east of there to Arlington. Get it as early as you can. By late morning, the wind drops to 11-14 or less form Stevenson to Swell with light and variable wind to the east. The wind may even drop lower than that. Do not despair. It’ll be back on Saturday. High temp Friday: 94F.

A brief glance at the weekend hints at 27-31 on Saturday and 17-20 on Sunday. Have a great week!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
