Gorge Wind Forecast

Marine clouds have pushed into the far western Gorge this morning mimicking yesterday. Expect the wind on the river to do the same – looks like a carbon copy of what we saw on Saturday. Westerlies dip a bit on Monday and Tuesday but come roaring back on Wednesday. Today’s the 4th. Enjoy the municipal fireworks, and remember that personal use fireworks are banned all across the Gorge.

Details for Sunday include gradients starting at 0.12 and 0.06 with westerlies generally in the 19-22 range from Viento to Mosier with 15-18 out east and 24-28 at always-wind Viento. We’ll see the wind level out by mid-morning. You’ll find building westerlies at Stevenson (teens), 23-26 from Viento to Mosier, and 15-18 east of there for the first half of the day. Afternoon wind drops in the west in response to heating in Portland; you’ll find 20-23 at Stevenson through the evening with 15-19 from Viento to Swell. From Moiser to Rufus, the wind rises to 24-27. East of there: 20-23 to Arlington. River flow is 172kcfs, river temp is 67F, and high temp for Hood River is 83F.

The stable weather setup continues on Monday. Slightly less marine clouds mean slightly less thermal assistance and slightly less wind. Dawn Patrol westerlies will be 19-22 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 near Stevenson and 5-10 from Lyle to Arlington. Midday westerlies build to 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. heat in the desert keeps the wind at 7-10 at Rufus through midday with light westerlies east of there. Afternoon, as often happens on clear days in the metro area, sees the wind drop to 15-18 from Viento to Hood River. Stevenson holds at 20-23. From Lyle to The Dalles, the wind holds at 22-25. east of there, from Maryhill to Arlington, the wind finishes the day at 15-18. High temp: 87.

Warmer weather on Tuesday focuses the wind on the central Gorge; Portland likely starts the day cloudless, and high temps will be near 100F from The Dalles eastward. Early westerlies will be 17-20 from Viento to Mosier with light wind to the east and 5-10 at Stevenson. A midday lull is almost guaranteed with Portland’s predicted performance. Westerlies build back late afternoon to 21=-24 from Mosier to The Dalles with 14-17 west of there and 10-13 at Rufus. Arlington struggles to beat 10mph. High temps on Tuesday range form 93F in the western Gorge to 100F in The Dalles. Stronger wind and somewhat cooler temps are forecast for Wednesday.

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. From the 44trails.org website… Open trails: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks (to 1.5 miles above the 4410 road), 450 to the junction with 15 mile, Underhill. Upper 450: patches of snow and 10 trees down. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed”.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure. Surveyor’s Ridge: clear of snow and trees. Other 44 Road Trails: clearing in progress. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails.
