Wednesday: plenty of clouds, plenty of wind

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Looking out the window this morning, there’s sure no sign of wind. The Columbia is glassy, low clouds swaddle the hills, and blue sky is nowhere to be seen. Happily, things will change this afternoon (it’s Wednesday). We’ll see westerlies today, Thursday, and then a round of stronger westerlies on Friday. Weekend – an upper level low off the coast shuts things down on Saturday, but westerlies return on Sunday.

Digging into the details, we coincidentally find high pressure digging in offshore, briefly anyway. Our morning wind won’t be much to speak of – just light easterlies in the almost-not-windy range. Flow turns around midday. By early afternoon, we’re looking at 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles, holding through the evening. River flow is 295kcfs and temp is 57 degrees.

A low pressure system inland on Thursday turns upper flow southerly. This gives us a shot at showers and thundershowers east of The Dalles. While this isn’t a great setup for wind, offshore high pressure will keep the synoptic-scale wind favorable; expect 10-13 everywhere along the river to start the day. By noon, we’ll have 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon wind climbs from 21-24 from Mosier to Biggs. Do watch for desert thunderstorms building and adjust your game plan accordingly.

ON to Friday. Offshore high pressure combines with a strong low moving into the desert. Last time this happened, it was too windy! That won’t be the case this time even though the setup is similar. We’ll have westerlies at 23-26 for Dawn Patrol from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon wind builds to 29-33 from Avery to Threemile with 12-15 in the west. That said, thunderstorms are a distinct possibility east of John Day Dam. Again, adjust your plans accordingly.

Weekend: not so windy on Saturday. Windier on Sunday, but rainy.
