Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Yesterday’s forecast of snow did not materialize, resulting in a hard-and-fast carving morning on Mt. Hood. The forecast does call for a bit of snow on Saturday night and additional light snowfall through Monday.
For Saturday, it’ll start off clear and quickly turn cloudy. Snow starts around 4pm. The snow level will be 6000′ early, and will steadily fall to 3000′ after midnight. Overnight precip will be about 0.3” water value (WV), for 2-3” of dense snow. That should improve the groom for Sunday! Wind Saturday will be SW 15-20 in the morning and SW 5-10 in the afternoon and overnight.
Sunday sees flurries early, sunshine midday, and light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 500′ mid-afternoon, and down to the surface after midnight. Just a trace of snow falls during the day. Snowfall picks up after 4pm, resulting in 0.2” WV overnight, for a couple inches of regular old Cascade snow. Wind will be SW 5-10 in the morning, WSW 20 in the afternoon, and SSW 15 overnight.
The GFS likes the idea of some easterly orographic snowfall on Monday, but most of the moisture will be confined to the lower levels of the atmosphere, so that’s a big “maybe”. The snow level will be at the surface all day with mountain temps in the teens. We’ll see up to 0.3” WV during the day, mostly confined to the lowest elevations on the east side of Mt. Hood. Call it 1-3” of snow, depending on elevation and location. The wind predicted by the sounding model doesn’t pick up the easterlies, which makes the snow even more likely; the forecast is for S 15 early, SW 10 in the afternoon, and E 10 overnight, by which time the moisture is gone. Tuesday looks cold and clear with temps in the teens.
Gorge Wind Forecast
For Saturday, we’ll have light and variable wind all day. Sunday starts off with westerlies: 20-23 from Stevenson to Moiser. By mid-morning, western Gorge wind backs off to 10-13 and the stronger wind, 20-23, shifts to the stretch from Mosier to Biggs. Areas farther east will be 5-10, and the whole Gorge will back off to W 5-10 after 1pm. Monday looks like easterlies at 30-35 after 4am near Rooster Rock and Stevenson.

Hood River Weather Forecast
We’re headed into a stretch, a long stretch, of colder weather. For Saturday, we’ll have clouds. Light sprinkles early give way to dry weather midday and light rain after 7pm or so. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks sprinkly early, dry midday, and rainy turning snowy after 7pm. Temps will be in the mid 30’s in the morning, low 40’s in the evening, and below freezing after 10pm. Up to 1-2” of snow is possible. West wind turns easterly overnight. 54% chance of rainbows. Monday brings light snowfall all day through 4pm. An additional 1-3” of snow is possible. East wind. No rainbows. Next round of snow looks like Thursday, and it could get quite messy if the forecast holds!

Road and Mountain Biking
Hood River received about 0.05” of rain yesterday, meaning Post is probably slick and not the best choice for traction. Other than that… if you head out today, be mindful of areas not under the canopy. Those locations are likely freeze-thaw. It’s definite freeze-thaw above upper 8-Track, so please no shuttling. That’s a situation where the soil structure liquefies, leaving it susceptible to damage. If you encounter freeze-thaw, please turn around so you don’t undo the hard work of volunteer trail crews. Whoopdee was reported to me by the trail builder as freeze-thaw, so please don’t go there.
