Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Sunday’s looking like a sunny day on the mountain, and the weather looks to remain dry through at least Wednesday. Models disagree on the forecast after that, with the timing and intensity of incoming precipitation all over the map.

For Sunday, expect a sunny and warm day on the mountain. Free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ during the day, falling overnight. It’s hard to say where the freezing level will be after midnight – it appears that warm and cold layers of air will alternate. Anyway, high temps on Sunday will be in the 50’s at 5000′. Wind will be NW 20 all day becoming NE 15 overnight.

Monday looks clear. The free air freezing level will be all over the place, but it does appear that temps will be above freezing between 4000′ and 9000′ or so with lower elevation near the mountain below freezing. Wind could get interesting – models suggest NE 15 in the morning, SW 10 in the afternoon, and NW 15 overnight. A stable layer of air right around the elevation of the Cascade Crest could dramatically increase wind on the downslope (west) side of the Cascades.

Tuesday looks clear. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ in the morning and sub-freezing below 4000′ or so (at the elevation of the groomed Nordic areas). By afternoon, temps should rise above freezing everywhere below 9000′. Wind will be NW 10-=15 all day.

Wednesday looks cloudy. FAF: 8000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind: NW 10 early, WNW 10 in the afternoon, SW 10 overnight. Next chance of precip: Thursday, maybe? Models bring a heavier round of warm precip into the area on Friday, but the exact location varies by model, so no precision in the forecast is possible at this time!

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Sunday, we’ll have light westerlies in the morning and light easterlies in the afternoon. By “light”, I mean 5-10 in the morning from Stevenson to Mosier. In the afternoon, the easterlies will build from the east, reading 5-10 east of Stevenson, but probably not filling in from Stevenson westward until after sunset. Those easterlies build all night. You can expect E 40-50 at Rooster Rock on Monday with 30-35 near Stevenson. Tuesday looks like E 40-50 in the morning and E 20-30 in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with E 10-15 and backs off to light and variable.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt on Syncline is excellent. Not excellent are all the new trails made by people and dogs cutting the corners. NOT COOL. Another problem at Syncline: ticks. Yuck. Ticks EVERYWHERE! The Worst Ticks Ever. Maybe wear tick repellent if you’re going there. As for Post, despite someone titling a Strava ride as “Tacky”, I have reports that Post is definitely muddy. Therefore, you should avoid it. Riding it will damage it, and if you consider yourself exempt from this, you’re being selfish. If Post is too muddy, Whoopdee and Hospital are also most likely too muddy. Please don’t.
