Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and it’s a bit of a mucky morning on Mt. Hood. Early morning rain will transition to snow, but no so soon as to make for a powder day. After Wednesday, the weather turns dry and warm through Sunday and stays dry (if not warm!) through at least Tuesday. This will result in ab-fab spring skiing for the weekend with 5000′ temps greater than 50 degrees.

Details for Wednesday: The snow level early in the morning will be around 6000′. It’ll drop to 3500′ around noon and then fluctuate for the rest of the day as warmer upper-level air starts to drift in. Daytime precip will be about 0.3” water value, for maybe 1-2” of snow once temps drop. A trace of precip may fall in the evening as scattered snowflakes. Wind will be W 50 early, NW 30 midday, and NNW 15-20 overnight.

Thursday looks clear an sunny. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ early, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind will be NW 10 all day. Friday may start out with some high clouds and a colorful sunrise. The freezing level will be 7000′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: NW 15 early, N 20 in the afternoon, and N 15 overnight. Saturday’s freezing level will be 10,000′ with max temps in the mid 50’s. Wow.

Temps drop sunday night into Monday as cold air arrives from the north and east. The sounding model, as NWS pointed out this morning, indicates the possibility of a downslope wind event on Monday. A stable layer of air at 10,000′ could redirect the east flow downslope, setting up a very, very windy day on the hill. I’ve only seen this once in the last 10 years, but it was pretty spectacular when it did happen. Fingers crossed!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Strong west wind on Wednesday morning gives way to lighter westerlies for the next couple of days. A low pressure system moving onto Vancouver Island drops into central Washington this morning, driving strong western Gorge wind. We’ll have 25-35 from Stevenson to Hood River until 11am or so. Areas east of Hood River will see west wind at 10-13. After 11am, the low dissipates, and the wind drops. Call it 10-13 in the west and 14-17 east of The Dalles. Thursday brings westerlies at 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. Friday looks like 22-25 out of the west from Stevenson to Mosier all day. Areas east of Mosier will see light wind. The most interesting thing in the long-range forecast is a chance of E 50-70 on Monday. River flow Wednesday: 73,300cfs. Temp: 41 degrees.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

It did rain yesterday, so all the rain-sensitive trails are out due to mud. Syncline should be fine this afternoon after the west wind dries it out. This morning will probably be too windy for Syncline. Thursday still looks amazing for road biking. After temps in the upper 40’s under clear sky with light west wind.
