Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a tricky morning for wind forecasting, because the NWS gradients aren’t making any sense for the eastern Gorge. So let’s skip them. Today’s forecast has an area of low pressure moving to the east of the Cascades. It also has a front approaching the coast this evening. In addition, areas west of Mosier will remain cloudy all day. That means you’ll want to drive east, and also jump on the wind by mid-afternoon for the best results (but does not necessarily mean the late afternoon session will suck). River temp is 65 degrees. Flow at The Dalles is 260kcfs.

So, for Thursday, we’ll have 18-23 west of Mosier and east of Rufus to start the day. Mosier to The Dalles will start with 22-25, and Avery to Rufus seem to be in the 26-30 range already, so let’s go with that. We’ll see the wind build to 27-31 from Mosier to Rufus with periods of 30-35 possible. Roosevelt will hover in the 18-22 range this morning and build to 27-31 late this afternoon. Because the Stevenson to Mosier stretch will likely remain cloudy all day, the wind there will be gusty and in the 18-23 range. Viento, as always, will probably be windier, with 23-27 likely.

Friday sees that previously mentioned front move inland during the day and clear the area by mid-afternoon. This doesn’t usually give great results, but the GFS thinks it will. So, best case scenario: morning wind at 9-12 with a chance of sprinkles west of Mosier. East of Mosier, you’ll find 12-15 to start the day. The wind will build to 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus by late morning, holding through the evening, and becoming steadier as the day goes on. Roosevelt will be in the 21-25 range from late morning on, picking up to 26-30 late afternoon. The forecast has clouds all day for areas west of Moiser, meaning the wind will be gustier and less, probably maxing out at 13-16 (except for windy Viento, which will probably see 23-27).

Saturday looks partly cloudy to start and clear in the evening with another front approaching late. That translates to 7-10 to start the day from Stevenson to the Dalles with light wind east of there. By noon, the wind will build to 20-23 from Viento to The Dalles and 14-19 at Stevenson. Afternoon wind will build to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus, likely becoming up-and-down at Swell and most reliable from Doug’s to Avery. Roosevelt will join in after 5pm. Sunday currently looks like 25-28, most consistent east of Hood River.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 12-15. Friday; 5-10. Saturday: 15-18. Sauvie’s Thursday: 8-11. Friday: 8-11. Saturday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: X/X/25-30, W swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Friday: W5/N5/25-30, W 4′ @ 11. Friday: 5-10/15-20/30+, W 5′ @ 9.

Random Morning Thoughts

Emotions are funny things. They are naturally part of us, but sometimes our minds or nervous systems or whatever you want to call it will run screaming from particular emotions. These are often emotions we find painful, but they can also be pleasant emotions we learned were “bad” when we were little tykes. You know… pride, love, joy… Sometimes parents, sadly, don’t like to see those things.

So anyway, we avoid feeling certain things. This is a natural defense mechanism. Unfortunately, the result of this is often other feelings, most frequently anxiety but sometimes depression (which isn’t really a specific emotion, but a combination of feelings and physical symptoms).

If you can catch this cycle happening, you’ll gain more power over it. Ask yourself this: “What emotion do I hate to feel?” Take your first response, and attempt to feel it. You’ll likely feel anxiety or fear or even panic come up next. Then see what happens. If you can take a curious stance, you might find yourself amused and amazed by the way your unconscious has learned to “protect” you. Now that you see the cycle, you can learn to feel that thing without panic, and then you can avoid the consequences of not feeling it. Neato! May you be well. Have an awesome day.
