Gorge Wind Forecast
First thing this morning is a poop advisory for beaches from West Mayer in Rowena to The Dalles Riverfront Park. You choose whether to include the Lyle Sandbar in that advisory. This comes to you courtesy of The Dalles Public Works, who (shit!) have some problems at the sewage treatment plant.
The general wind picture for the next several days is complicated by a series of weather systems impacting the Northwest. As we’ve all figured out by now, this makes the wind trickier to predict. For Thursday, a trough of low pressure moves inland and a front approaches well off the coast. Low-level instability will affect the reliability of the wind field. With all that out of the way, we’ll see the wind build to gusty 24-28 by late morning from Stevenson to Rufus. The wind will fill in to Arlington after 2pm. It’s possible we’ll see periods of 29-33 from Lyle to Rufus, where there’s still too much current. River flow is 440kcfs. Temp is 57 degrees.
High pressure builds over the region on Friday as a weak front touches the coastal areas. Inland, we’ll see less wind, but probably more than the GFS predicts. Friday starts with 5-10 in the western Gorge under low clouds. East of The Dalles, the day starts with 12-15. In the afternoon, we’ll have 18-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles.
The GFS likes the idea of a light wind day on Saturday. The Euro is a bit more optimistic. Let’s call it light west wind in the morning (5 or less) with 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell in the afternoon. Models have been consistently predicting a windy day on Sunday, and this morning’s run is no exception. We will be dealing with atmospheric dynamics, especially in the afternoon, so don’t be waiting around. We’ll start Sunday with 17-20 Viento to Swell. The wind builds to 28-32 from late morning on from Stevenson to The Dalles, filling in to Arlington after 2pm. Periods of 30-35 are possible from Viento to Doug’s.
BONUS: Jones Thursday: 10-13. Friday: X. Saturday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Thursday: 8-11. Friday: 8-11 late. Saturday: 5-8. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: W5/W5/N 10-15, W swell 4′ at 8 seconds. Friday: X/X/10-15, W 5′ @ 12. Saturday: 20-25/15-20/30+, W 5′ @ 11.
