Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

The westerlies have been messing with the forecast the last couple of days. Gradients have been plentiful, but wind has been uncooperative. This is due, in part anyway, to atmospheric instability and other unknown dynamics that apparently impact the wind. In other words, wind is hard to predict! Flow, however, is not so hard to predict. We have a mindblowing 548,000cfs this morning. River temp is 56 degrees.

Friday, once again, is starting off windy. A trough and frontal system moving in from the northwest will increase the pressure gradients as the day goes on. This means the gradient and wind might not correlate how we’d like for much of the day. However, models suggest the atmosphere will stabilize late afternoon, ramping the wind way up. So, the ideal forecast goes like this: 17-20 from Viento to Arlington with 10-13 near Stevenson to start the day. Wind builds to gusty 20-24 by mid-morning, holding until late afternoon. Then the wind ramps up to 26-30 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models actually predict more, but I’m being conservative due to the timing.

Saturday morning starts with DAWN PATROL from Mosier to Rufus at 25-29 as clouds pour into the western Gorge. By late morning, lasting until evening, we’ll have 28-33 from Stevenson to Rufus with 23-26 out at Arlington. TIRED!

Sunday sees warmer temps in the west due to a ridge. That will knock the wind down a bit. However, offshore high pressure and no atmospheric dynamics mean we’ll see relative steady wind. Call it 17-20 from Viento to Hood River early and 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. As of right now, Monday and Tuesday have model agreement on the westerlies maxing out at 27-31. YAY!

BONUS: Jones Friday: 24-28. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Friday: 15-18. Saturday: 7-10. Sunday: 9-13. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 15-20/15-20/15-20, W swell 4′ at 11 seconds. Saturday: X/X/25-30, W 4′ @ 9. Sunday & Monday: 5-10/15-20/30-40, W 6′ @ 11.
