Gorge Wind Forecast
Gorge westerlies continue through Friday. The weekend currently looks light and variable – great for biking, but not so great for sports requiring wind. We’ll also see the coast wind start to ramp up on Thursday as high pressure builds off the coast.
For Wednesday, we’ll have gusty westerlies as weak weather systems move through. The day starts with W 15-28 from Viento to The Dalles. In the afternoon, the wind will stay at 7-11 near Cascade Locks. The rest of the Gorge, Viento to Arlington, will have gusty 22-26. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow is 429kcfs, meaning the current will be very strong at Rufus.
Thursday sees a ten degree high temp drop as additional weather systems move through. The wind will be helped by building offshore high pressure. We’ll start the day with 15-18 from Viento to Rufus. IN the afternoon, the wind picks up to gusty 24-28 from Viento to Rufus with 12-15 in the far eastern Gorge.
Friday looks pretty solid, at least from today’s perspective. Offshore high pressure combines with an afternoon heat low in the desert. Models do disagree on wind strength, with the GFS much more robust. Let’s go with that for now: 17-21 in the morning and 26-30 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to The Dalles. The ECMWF is thinking more along the lines of 23-26 from Stevenson to Arlington. Looking at the weekend, we’ll have light and variable wind both days.
Random Morning Thoughts
My thoughts are on vacation until I get through my comprehensive exam on Friday!
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
