Gorge Wind Forecast
There’s nothing in the way of westerlies to start Tuesday, but they’ll be back in the afternoon. West wind continues through Friday. Just FYI, the E. Coli tests are back to normal in The Dalles, so the beaches have all reopened. River temp is 52 degrees. Flow this morning is 414kcfs, a lot for the Rufus stretch.
So, Tuesday. A low pressure system off the coast will swing a cold front through in the afternoon. Marine air will move into Portland, the atmosphere will destabilize, and the westerlies will pick up. Light and variable wind early gives way to E 15-20 in the afternoon. Around 2pm, a brief period of extra-gusty 24-28 will hit Stevenson, then Swell, then Doug’s… you get the picture!
The atmosphere stabilizes on Wednesday and high pressure starts to build off the coast. Morning wind will be 10-13 in the west and 18-22 east of Mosier. In the afternoon, the wind will pick up to 23-26 or so from Mosier to Arlington. Swell and Hood River are questionable due to cloud cover, but it’s likely we’ll have at least 15-18 from Stevenson to Bingen.
Marine clouds and NW flow continue on Thursday along with strong offshore high pressure. It currently looks like we’ll have 11-14 everywhere to start with 24-28 in the afternoon from Viento to Arlington. The long-range (and unreliable, of course!) forecast looks like 20-23 Friday with light and variable wind for the weekend.

Mountain Weather Forecast
A couple of warm days give way to brief light snowfall followed by a return to warm weather for the weekend. Tuesday starts out clear. Clouds and a chance of thunder and light rain move in around 2pm. The snow level will be 13,000′ early, 12,000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight. A trace of rain falls before 2pm and up to 1/4” rain falls tonight. Wind will be S 10-12 early, light and variable in the afternoon, and SSW 20-25 after midnight.
Wednesday sees intermittent light rain and mostly clear sky. A few snowflakes may fall overnight. The snow level will be 9000′ during the day and 4000′ after midnight. Snowfall and rainfall will both be in the “trace” category, especially considering that there’s a good chance it’ll just be sunny. Wind will be SSW 20-25 early, WSW 20 in the afternoon and W 15 overnight.
Thursday starts off clear, turns cloudy, then turns snowy. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. Perhaps 1” of snow will fall during the day Thursday followed by another 2” of snow overnight. Wind will be W 15 in the morning, NW 20 int eh afternoon, and WNW 15 overnight. Friday starts off cloudy and turns clear. Saturday and Sunday look very warm and dry and sunny.
Gorge Weather Forecast
Oh look – it’s sunny! We’ll see increasing clouds today and some light rain tonight. Temps will be near 50 early and near 80 this afternoon, which could triggers a few thunderstorms. Light wind early, brief strong westerlies after 2pm. 18% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks mostly cloudy early and partly cloudy later. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly cloudy to mostly clear. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate to strong westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
Lewis River is reportedly open to the landslide from the bottom. Knebal, Eightmile, and Bottle Prairie are not open. I have a report of 5-7 trees down on the singletrack section of Surveyor’s with the rest rideable. Kitchen Sink is apparently riding good. Wednesday is the women’s Post n’ Pinot ride at Dirty Fingers. Thursday is the race-pace Post n’ Pint. Mountain View Cycles has an unnamed women’s mountain bike ride Thursday evening at 5pm leaving from the shop. 5:30pm at the bottom of Post Canyon.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include by-donation Qi Gong at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30, and meditation at yoga Samadhi in White Salmon at 6:30.
Friday is national bike to work day, and the weather’s looking perfect for it with sunshine and warm temps. Looking at the weekend, it’s all about gardening, following good germination weather this week. On Saturday, there’s a plant sale at The Next Door, and it’s also the annual Master Gardeners Plant Sale. Both are in Hood River off Tucker Road. The Cascade Chainbreaker race is in Bend on Sunday.
The Carson to Stevenson Ridge Run is Saturday. The HRATS have a trail work party meeting at Family Man in Post Canyon at 9:30 on Saturday. Cascade Locks has high school and college sailboat races both days this weekend.
