Gorge Wind Forecast
If you’ve been enjoying the westerlies, you can continue to enjoy them today. A nice temp gradient across the Cascade combines with offshore high pressure for moderate westerlies. Morning gradients were .12 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). That seems indicative to me of slightly stronger wind than models indicate. Let’s go with gusty 16-22 pretty much everywhere this morning. In the afternoon, the clouds will burn back from east to west. That sets us up for 23-26 from Viento to The Dalles. Given the extent of the morning clouds, it’s possible the strong-and-steady-and-sunny section will end up being Mosier to Rufus. The far eastern Gorge will see 12-15 this afternoon.
Wednesday might be windy enough for foil-boarding, and it might not: light westerlies early, calm wind midday, and W 5-10 in the evening from Stevenson to Mosier. Thursday starts off with W 7-11 from Stevenson to Hood River. In the afternoon, and the wind picks up to W 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 5-10 in the eastern Gorge. It does look like we’ll see west wind most days through the weekend… not super clear, I know, but just keeping these sports on the radar! River temp is 51 degrees, and flow this morning was 337kcfs at The Dalles (pretty strong for Rufus – be prepared for lots of current).
Random Morning Thoughts
I woke up this morning to a squeaky cat squeaking in my ear. Normally this upsets me, because I like sleep. But this morning, the first thing through my mind after a squeaky little meow was, “Oh shit,” as I realized I’d forgotten to record the rec report over the course of my 17 hour Monday. Fortunately, I was able to get it done in time. No harm done.
So there’s two things here. First, a squeaky cat in the wee hours of the morning can either be really good or really annoying. This depends on context. So, there’s nothing inherently good or bad about an early-morning cat. This idea can be generalized to a lot of things: most things are not inherently good or bad. It really depends on our perception and the context. We can use this understanding to create a bit of distance from situations, and in doing so, we can reduce our distress.
The second thing: my day started off with a shitty burst of adrenaline and a bit of panic about not getting my work done. This could impact my entire day. Instead, I’m trying to be nice to myself until the adrenaline wears off and the coffee kicks in. No, those two are not interchangeable! See, we often try and push ourselves to keep moving forward when something bad happens. Sometimes we just need to relax and rest for a bit so we can regather our equanimity to move forward. That is all. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.
Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
There’s no snow in the forecast for at least the next five days. We’ll see warm and sunny weather for most of that time, likely followed by high clouds for the weekend. For Tuesday, it’ll be clear with a chance of some mid-level scattered clouds, especially in the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4500′ this morning and 7000′ this afternoon. N wind at 15ish all day and NE 5 overnight.
Wednesday looks sunny. The FAF will be 7000′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. NE wind at 5 early and NW 10 in the afternoon. Ditto for Thursday: sunny and warm with NW 10 in the morning and SW 10 in the afternoon. Ditto on Friday. Saturday and Sunday currently look like high overcast days with a chance of sprinkles.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, and things should clear up as the day goes on. Temps will be near 50 early and in the low 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 1% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks sunny, dry and calm. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
According to Dirty Fingers (who reported something from the Ranger), Knebal and Eightmile and Surveyor’s are open. Given a photo I received yesterday, that information is not true. Knebal and Eightmile are not open, which makes a lot more sense than them being open this time of year. Dog River, however, is hosting the Super D this weekend, so it being open makes sense. Other than that, you will find ridiculous amounts of wildflowers on any trail east of Post Canyon right now.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include by-donation moving meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at 6:15. There’s a free meditation and breathing class at Flow Yoga in Hood River at 8. Trinity has free Qi Gong at noon. Then this evening, there’s a free women’s only mobility, strength and self=defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6, and free meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi at 630. Cascade Acupuncture has an open house tomorrow night at their new location on the corner of May and Rand.
Looking at this weekend, you’ll find the Eta Aquarids meteor shower both mornings – it’s looking like we’ll have some clouds this weekend, and maybe a few scattered sprinkles, so you may have to drive east of the Cascade Crest for the beset meteor results. The Dog River Super D race runs this weekend off Highway 35, so avoid that trail.

Have an awesome day today!
