Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A disappointing show by Mother Nature over the last couple of days will be followed by several days of snow accumulation this week. Following the freshies will be a sunny day on Saturday (most likely) with a return to light and intermittent snowfall on Sunday.

For Wednesday, a partly cloudy morning quickly gives way to snowfall. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. About .4” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 4” of new. Another .5” falls overnight, for another 5-6” of snow. Wind will be SW 15-20 all day and WNW 30 after midnight.

Thursday starts off with mixed flurries and sunbreaks. Afternoon and evening snow follows. The snow level will be 1000′ early, slowly rising to 2500′ overnight. About .3” WV falls during the day, for about 3” of new. Another .2-.3” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” additional accumulation. Wind will be WNW 30 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Friday looks snowy during the day and high overcast overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. About .5-.7” WV falls during the day, for 5-6” of relatively dense new snow. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind Friday will be W 25 early, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and SW 20 after midnight. It’s worth noting that the Euro is predicting less snow than this – I’ve gone with the GFS here for simplicity.

Saturday currently looks dry to start with a pretty sunrise. Snow starts up overnight and continues through Sunday with the snow level around 3000′ and light to moderate wind. Generally speaking, the Euro predicts that we continue to receive light snowfall for the first half of next week.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m not sure if you knew this, but my cat is the best cat ever. Why? Because she makes squeaky noises, sits on my shoulder, and because I caught her flattened to the floor under a low-lying chair the other day. I’m sure you think your pet is the best ever too!

When we’re in relationship, we have some choices about what to focus on. Do we focus on the endearing things (squeaky meows) or the annoying things (squeaky meows in my face at 4am). If we find the balance tipping in favor of the latter, it’s time to do some reflection on what’s changed.

Our annoyance often has nothing to do with the behavior in question; no, it’s more likely related to other dynamics in the relationship or to stressors outside the relationship. For example, my cat’s 4am cuddle requests are adorable if I’m well rested and sure I’ll get back to sleep, but if I’m stressed out and not sleeping well, 4am love requests do not go over well with me (and btw, reinforcing her with this variable ratio schedule is going to make her, or any pet, request more often).

So, if you find yourself irritated and annoyed by others, ask yourself what’s going on in your life. And see what you can do to self-soothe rather than lashing out. Because the former will keep those people around to support you, and the latter is likely to cause more stress. May you be surrounded by loving people. And pets. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of weather systems moving into the Northwest will drive gusty westerlies of varying strengths for the next few days. For Wednesday, we’ll have E 5-10 for the first half of the day with W 10-13 after 2pm. The wind will pick up overnight, starting off Thursday with W 12-15 in the western Gorge and gusty 23-27 east of The Dalles. The wind will bounce up and down all day, generally remaining in the 20’s all day long. Friday looks light and variable for the first half of the day with W 12-15 or so in the afternoon from Swell eastward. River temp is 46 degrees. Given all the rain we’ve had recently, you’ll want to watch out for unmarked obstacles and hazards floating in the river.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m guessing Syncline is great, and someone posted a ride on Whoopdee from the other day. Post? Probably muddy, too muddy to ride without damaging it. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, and that means NO DOGS. Even your dog! Today’s going to be pretty wet for riding anyway – we are expecting rain. The next chance for a decent day of riding will be Friday east of Hood River and Saturday everywhere.
