Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s Sunday on the slopes, and the groom continues to be amazing. It’ll be a little harder than it was on Saturday, but still carveable and fun. The skate skiing conditions will be as good as they get today. We’ll have a little snow tonight, sunshine Tuesday, Sun and warmer weather Wednesday, and then snow on Thursday into Friday. This is an improvement; prior forecasts were hinting at rain for the second half of the week.
For Sunday, the free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. Light snowfall starts up around 7pm, with about .2” WV overnight. That works out to 2-3” new snow. Wind will be W15 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight.
Models disagree on Monday’s weather. The GFS likes it partly cloudy. The ECMWF continues the light snowfall. Either way the snow level will be 500′ or less early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ under clear sky overnight. At most, a couple inches of snow will fall. Wind will be W 15-20 all day and WSW 10 after midnight.
Tuesday looks sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. This will probably take much of the snowpack from packed powder to hardpack, but conditions should still be excellent for carving and XC skiing. Wind Tuesday will be WSW 10 all day and WSW 20 overnight.
Wednesday looks sunny and warm during the day with flurries or light snowfall overnight. The FAF will be 6500′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. Up to 1” of snow will fall. Wind will be WSW 20 during the day, SSW 15 in the afternoon, and SW 25-30 overnight. The current forecast brings about a foot of snow on Thursday into Friday morning.
Random Morning Thoughts
I harp on this a lot, but humans are wired to be focused on the negative. We can change this. For example, we often think about what we dislike about particular seasons. Winter is cold. YUCK! We also focus on the loss associated with the change of seasons. But guess what? Everything changes. Time progresses. And the seasons will keep moving.
We’ll continue to experience painful or negative thoughts, but we can decide to use them as a trigger for positive thoughts. For example, each time you think about how much you hate the heat of summer, you can then think about how much you love kiteboarding or road biking or gardening or late sunsets and early sunrises. Remembering to do this will take effort at first, but your mind will eventually learn to do this automatically. When you notice your mind doing this automatically, you might even giggle and realize you’ve gained a deeper understanding of how the mind words.
This process, of course, works in other areas of our lives. We can train our mind to associate something positive with something negative, thus reducing our suffering. The opposite is also true, and can be the source of much suffering, of expectations, for example, that “the other shoe is about to drop.” It is your choice which way you’d like to train your mind. You can start linking good things with bad, or you can choose to keep bad things linked with good. You do have the power to make your mind respond as you would prefer. May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking
With temps at 28 overnight, Syncline may have freeze-thaw conditions today. Same goes for exposed areas of Post or anywhere else. If you ride, you may do significant trail damage. You’ll also coat your bike in sticky mud. If protecting the trails doesn’t motivate you, maybe protecting your bike will! Please ride under a tree canopy today! Or do some road or gravel riding – it’s a beautiful day for that too!
