Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

If you like packed powder and groomed runs, you’ll want to get to the mountain right now, today, before massive snowfall buries everything this weekend. It’s also going to be windy this weekend, so be prepared for storm skiing!

For Friday, the day will start of clear and quickly turn cloudy, maybe in time for a pretty sunrise. Snow starts up around 5pm. The snow level will be 0′ early and 500′ in the afternoon and overnight. The mountain will pick up .5” water value (WV) tonight, for 5-7” of fluffy powder. Wind will be light northerly early, W 20 in the afternoon, and WNW 35-40 overnight.

Saturday looks snowy. Powdery, actually, with snowfall and wind all day. The snow level will be 500-1000′ all day. About .7” WV falls during the day, for 8-9” of fluffy pow. Another .4” falls overnight, adding 4-5” pow to the total. Wind will be W 45 for much of the day, WNW 30 in the afternoon, and WNW 50-55 overnight. The overnight wind will likely impact snow quality.

Sunday currently looks nothing short of EXTREME!!! The snow level will be 500-1000′ all day and 0-500′ overnight. The current forecast calls for 2.5” WV during the day. If that happens, we could see upwards of two feet of new snow between 4am and 4pm. Bring a shovel to extricate yourself from the ski resort parking lots. Another .3” WV is forecast to fall overnight, for a few more inches of powder. Wind could be problematic in the morning. The forecast is W 55 through 11am or so, which could shut down many lifts. After that, the wind drops to WNW 45 in the afternoon and NW 15-20 overnight.

Monday currently looks partly cloudy. Heavy snowfall returns for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Woot woot!

Random Morning Thoughts

There’s very exciting STUFF in the forecast for this weekend, and that’s got me excited and delighted on this very chilly morning. Thinking about all that STUFF makes me happy. It decreases my suffering.

Here is a very simple thing you can do to start reprogramming your mind. When something comes up, ask yourself this question: “Is this increasing or decreasing my suffering?” That’s it. You will likely be tempted to add some layers beyond yes/no. I invite you to simply answer the question. Yes, or no.

Don’t beat yourself up if the answer is no. Don’t try and figure out a solution. Just notice whether you are increasing or decreasing your suffering. Do this for a few days. After a few days, see if you can start making different choices about what to spend your mind time on. Speaking of, I’d better get going. I’m hungry! May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, we’ll start with E 15-20 near Rooster. After noon, the wind will switch to W 10-13 through the entire Gorge. Saturday starts with gusty 18-23 and picks up to gusty 25-29 everywhere. Hood River will likely see lesser wind in the 12-16 range. Sunday starts with gusty 22-26 most places. Hood River will probably have 7-11 or less. The wind will fill in at 24-27 through the entire Gorge on Sunday afternoon. Monday looks like W 12-15.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have a very tricky forecast this weekend as snow levels hover in the 0-1000′ range. For Friday, we’ll have clear sky early, clouds by midday, and snow over 500′ tonight. West wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks wet. The snow level will be 0-500′ early and 1000′ during peak heating. A couple inches of snow may fall at river level before a switch to rain. Temps will be near 30 early and near 40 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks just a bit warmer. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s in the afternoon with sub-freezing temps overnight. Heavy rain or rain mixed with snow falls most of the day. We’ll see 1/2” to 1” of snow overnight and icy roads. Moderate west wind. 78% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well, so much for mountain biking season! Everything is covered in snow and will likely stay that way through next week. If you have a fat bike, this is your time to try it out. But please, don’t ride in exposed areas – freeze-thaw cycles will make the trails delicate and susceptible to damage.

Upcoming Events

At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Have an awesome day today!
