Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning as I write this, and the overall weather picture is much less active for the next week than it was for the last week. That’s going to make for an easier forecast and more reliable wind. That said, the Columbia is filled with debris from the weekend rain. You’re risking life and limb if you get into the river right now. Hopefully things clear up in a few days. For Monday, we started out with easterlies in the teens at Rooster and light and variable wind near Stevenson. As a heat low moves up the coast and high pressure builds in the desert, the wind will pick up to 20-25 at Rooster and 15-20+ near Stevenson, holding all the way through dark.

Easterly gradients intensify overnight. Tuesday brings east wind at 30-35+ at Rooster Rock all day long. The Stevenson area will see easterlies at 25-30 all day. The wind will decrease the further east you go, but areas east of Viento will see easterlies at 5-8 in the afternoon.

A weak weather system passing to the north on Wednesday will turn the gradients around and set us up for a west wind day. We’ll start with 12-15 between Viento and Hood River. By midday, we should have gusty 21-25 between Stevenson and The Dalles. The wind should last until sunset.

High pressure quickly rebuilds in the desert on Thursday. That combines with a weak low pressure system off the coast for very strong easterly gradients. As of Monday morning, it’s looking like we’ll see easterlies at 40mph near Rooster and 30+ near Stevenson with afternoon easterlies at 10mph between Viento and Arlington.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve had the song Another Chance stuck in my head for the last several days. I could not figure out where it had come from – I haven’t heard the song in years.

I just glanced at my kitchen table and realized that the book “Another Chance: hope and health for the alcholic family” is in my to-read pile.

Oh. That makes sense now.

This doesn’t just happen with songs. It happens with thoughts and emotions too. With no warning, we can find ourselves thinking or feeling something unpleasant. Although this can happen randomly, it’s often triggered by something in our environment. If we can trace the start of our feelings back to something specific, we can loosen our mind’s hold over us.

We can do this with behaviors too. Psychological types call it a chain analysis: start now, and work backwards step by step in excruciating detail. Doing this can create insight. Insight is good, but there’s a more powerful leap: learning that you are not your thoughts and emotions.

If you can learn your triggers, you can watch them happening. You can realize they are automatic and unconscious, not products of your will. When you see this, you can start reacting differently. You can also start training your mind to have other reactions. It takes work, but it’s a reliable way out of the circle of emotional pain. It’s another chance, so to speak, to be free from unnecessary suffering. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I finally had a chance to look at the Mt. Hood rainfall totals from the Saturday-Sunday system. Timberline received 9” of rain, and Meadows received 6.5” of rain. Wow. Just wow. I guess that means we have a very consolidated snowpack for our base, eh? Looking at this week, there’s basically no precipitation in the forecast, except for Wednesday, when we may see afternoon sprinkles.

For Monday, the mountain will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′. Light and variable wind. Tuesday will be very warm. The free air freezing level will be >11,250′ with temps at 5000′ near 60 degrees. Wind on Tuesday will be SE 15 in the morning and SW 15 in the afternoon.

Wednesday looks sunny. The FAF will be >11,250′. Chance of clouds and light rain between 1pm and 6pm. Temps at 5000′ will be near 60 in the morning and 50 in the afternoon. Wind Wednesday will be NW 20-25 for most of the day with light and variable wind after sunset.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s dark and mostly clear as I’m writing this, but given the east wind and building inversion, it’s likely the Nothing cloud will make an appearance for the first half of the day. You can expect sunshine later. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 60’s (maybe… the inversion might keep us cooler) this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday will probably start with the big, ugly Nothing cloud and turn sunny later in the day. Temps will be near 40 early and 60 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts out sunny and turns partly cloudy as a weak weather system passes to the north. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. .05% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

With all the rain we had over the weekend (almost two inches), Post, Whoopdee and Hospital are going to be too wet to ride without damaging them. Syncline should be good. The 44 Road trails tend to drain better than these lower trails, and they might be an option. Hard to say if the rain melted the snow on the trails south of the 44 Road. Probably not Gunsight, but maybe Fifteenmile.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out.

Coming up today, there’s meditation at noon at Trinity Natural Medicine. There’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. This evening at 6pm, there’s community yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon. At 6:30, there’s community yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall and community Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell. There’s YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) in The Dalles at 6:45pm. There’s community meditation at Bethel Congregational Church in White Salmon – Bingen at 7pm.
