7/4 Wind goes vroom, sky goes boom!

Well, you’re not going to believe this: it’s going to be windy again today in the Gorge. There’s another shortwave weather feature impacting the Northwest this morning, and that’s going to impact the wind through late morning or so. That said, the 7am gradients were .09 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). That’ll be enough for 17-20…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Stevenson was buried in marine clouds early, leaving it with zero wind to start the day. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

As this weather feature moves through late morning, we’ll see the wind pick up. This setup does not favor the Swell to Hood River stretch of river. Instead, you’ll have better luck later today at Stevenson, the Rowena stretch, Avery, the Rufus stretch, and possibly also Roosevelt. So, 17-20 this morning from Swell to Doug’s, 13-16 further east. After noon, expect 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River. Arlington will join in a little bit later.

Tomorrow looks very similar to today, but an upper level low dropping in to Washington will deepen the marine layer. We should start the day with 17-20 from Swell to Doug’s, with 25-29 in the afternoon from Swell to Rufus. The strongest wind tomorrow is probably going to be in the Rowena stretch of the river.

Wednesday sees that upper level low move east. Along with that, we’ll have another little weather system moving through. All those dynamics aren’t conducive to steady wind. That said, it’s probably okay to expect 13-16 near Hood River in the morning with 20-23 from Hood River eastward in the afternoon.

If the weather models are correct, we’re going to head into a cooler, damper period starting late on Thursday. There are even showers predicted starting late Thursday and continuing through Sunday. Whether we get rain or not, we can expect marine clouds to push into the central Gorge later this week, shifting the wind a bit further east.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of my school projects this quarter is the assembly of a play therapy kit. It’s possible to buy the toys for a play therapy kit (it’s not just random toys), but the kits are hundreds of dollars. It’s not a lot of money when compared to tuition, but it’s still a big chunk of change.

There was a time when I volunteered at one of our local thrift stores, and I remembered that they just gave away the sorts of small toys that I was gathering. Long story short, they have saved me piles and piles of toys, and I have a great play therapy kit now.

The important part of this story is not the toys. It’s the attitude of the people involved. Everyone at the thrift store was so happy to give me toys. It made their week to help me, and it made my week that they are willing to help me. I could have spent a bunch of money to purchase a kit. Instead, these folks and me, we created a ton of goodwill in the universe. They’re happier, and I’m happier. And no money exchanged hands.

This is called “being nice to your fellow humans”. When we do kind things for others (pay the bridge toll of the person behind you, for example, or give lunch to the guy on the off ramp), we create positive feelings. The more positive feelings people have, the nicer they are to each other. So, step outside the hatred-vitriol-us v them cycle, and choose a different way. Be good to others. Pay it forward. You’ll make your community a better place.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly sunny out there this morning with a few high clouds from a weak shortwave. Expect sunshine today with temps in the upper 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. Fireworks instead of rainbows. Tuesday looks much like today, minus the fireworks. Wednesday looks like Tuesday. Rainbows are likely to return on Friday, so have your camera ready!

Road and Mountain Biking

By this time of year, we’re usually looking at dry trails for the rest of the summer. Well, I have a secret to share with you. Sssshhhhhhh. Lean in real close, k? Ok… looks like we might just get some rain late Thursday through Sunday. So, cross your fingers and don’t talk about it too much, or you’ll scare it away. In road biking news, the mornings will be the least windy times for you. Speaking of road biking, if you want to watch the Tour, they’re showing it at Dirty Fingers every afternoon.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the Kollas Cranmer run from Odell to Hood River, the Heros’ challenge in Washougal, and the Rocket Run in The Dalles. There’s also free yoga at Lewis & Clark Park in The Dalles at 9 today. If you’re watching fireworks in Hood River or the Dalles tonight, consider walking or biking to your viewing spot to save yourself a long wait in traffic at the end of the show.

I have no idea which of the weekly events are happening / not happening, so let’s just skip talking about them today, ok?

Looking ahead to next weekend, Skibowl has mountain bike races Friday through Sunday. There’s mountain bike demos at Trailgate 2016 at Billy Bob snowpark on Saturday, and the JenJoy run is in Cascade Locks on Saturday. Hood River County has a trail work party in Post Canyon next Saturday, and The Larch Mountain Uphill Time Trial race is in Corbett on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
