Something happened in the upper atmosphere last night to kick off a little bit of convective activity (hence the colorful sunrise this morning). That doesn’t have all that much to do with our wind speeds today, but it seemed like a nice way to kick off the forecast. Anyway, the 5am gradients (no, not the cat alarm, just the internal alarm) were .05 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). That’s not all that much, and is a sign of inland high pressure. Gorge wind forecast, continued…
So, it’ll be a slow start in the Wind Tunnel today, with early morning breezes at just 5-10. Models are giving us a forecast of 5-10 through mid-afternoon with 13-16 in the evening. Given the forecast temp difference of 6 degrees between Hood River and Arlington, I think I’m going to bump that up just a bit. By mid-morning, expect 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. In the middle of the afternoon, we’ll have 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier, with the potential for 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s late in the afternoon.
Tomorrow starts off with 17-20 from Viento to Hood River. Gradients should start picking up midday as an upper level low moves into BC and offshore high pressure intensifies. Expect 23-26 by 1pm from Stevenson to The Dalles with 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus late in the afternoon. Arlington will probably join in after 5pm.

Friday sees another upper level low take up residence off Vancouver Island. That should help knock down the temps west of the Cascades. With ample sunshine and heat in the desert, Friday’s looking like a windy one. Expect Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier at 21-24. By midday, we should have 26-30 from Viento to Rufus.
Models have been predicting massive wind all weekend, but they’ve just backed off. We’re now expecting 22-25 on Saturday with 20-23 on Sunday with a solid chance of thunderstorms. See why I don’t do long-range forecasts? Useless, they are!

Road and Mountain Biking
I have two confirmed trail reports for you. There are seven trees down on Gunsight. Other than that, it is open and good to go. Ape Canyon is clear of trees. I have no word on Smith Creek. In road biking news, today looks pretty good, with a high temp near 80 and relatively light wind. Enjoy!
