5/31 Gorge wind and events report

Good morning,

It’s only 57 degrees in the Columbia River right now, and your body isn’t designed for that. Promotion wetsuits are. With thousands of wetsuits in stock and all sorts of not-so-stock sizes (and alterations on site), you’re going to find the perfect suit if you stop by. Promotion isn’t just wetsuits: it’s rashguards, booties, hoods, beanies, shorts, vests and PFDs. Cold water suits are on sale now. Protect yourself from the chilly river the local way: Promotion, based here since 1985. Two short-sleeve rashguards are up for grabs. If you’re interested in winning, sign up for the email with a donation of $10 or more and you’ll have a chance to win.

Today’s wind forecast has west wind at 15-18 near Hood River this morning, slowly picking up to 22-25 from Stevenson out to Maryhill this afternoon. It’s frontally driven wind, so it’s probably not going to be so steady, but hey, it’s wind. Tomorrow also starts off light, with west wind rising to 22-25 tomorrow afternoon from Stevenson all the way out to Arlington as the stalled front finally forces its way eastward.

On Saturday, the Gorge sets up better for wind, with offshore high pressure, coastal lower pressure, and a heat low of sorts in the desert. That should give us west wind in the mid to upper twenties from Stevenson east to Maryhill, and the wind should be less gusty than it’s been lately. The Columbia is currently at 321,000cfs, still pretty high, but low enough that the swell should be starting to pick up near Maryhill.

In events tonight, there’s a slow-paced road bike ride leaving Discover Bikes at 5pm, and there’s also the definitely-not-slow-paced Post and Pint mountain bike ride leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30 this evening. Ride the Post and Pint and earn yourself a free pint of beer. Not that it really matters, because happy hour beers are super cheap at the Dirty.

Don’t forget that Saturday is Oregon State Parks day, with free day use and overnight camping. Contact your favorite state park for more details (because I’m too lazy to type them out). Also on Saturday, there’s a CGWA work party at the Gorge’s newest beach, the Blackberry Beach in Cascade Locks. For you motoheads, CGORA has a swap meet at Watson Performance on Saturday from 9-1 and then they have a dirt bike ride starting at 2pm at Pine Mont.

Then on Sunday, there’s the women’s Gorgeous Gals road bike ride, with proceeds benefiting HAVEN in The Dalles, providing support to victims of domestic violence. I think it’s $45 to do this ride, and it goes to a great cause, so get your ass in the saddle and support your community.

Have an awesome day today!
