3/18 More glorious sunshine. More wildflowers. More perfect dirt.

Ah spring, you can be so tricky to forecast. For example, this morning’s actual winds have nothing in common with the wind that the models are predicting. Because of that, the temps on the mountain are off by 10 degrees from what the models are predicting. Meh. Anyway, one thing’s for certain: you can expect a sunny day on Mt. Hood today with overcast sky tonight. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ this morning, rising to 10,000′ this afternoon and dropping to 9000′ tonight. Wind will be NE 20 early, backing off midday and turning to SW 5-10 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday brings a mid-level layer of clouds, which may lead to sprinkles down low and sunshine up high on Mt. Hood. The likelihood of sprinkles will increase after 5pm. The snow level Saturday will be 8000′ early, dropping to 7000′ after midnight. If we see sprinkles (most likely after 5pm), they will be light in nature and will account for less than .2” water value, if that. Wind Saturday will be SW 10 early, becoming SSW 15-20 in the afternoon and evening.

Sunday looks partly cloudy, perhaps with some fog or sprinkles or mist or maybe even some sunshine, at least to start the day. By noon, we should see precipitation of some sort, and by 5pm, we’ll see heavier precip. Now, this is a little tricky: the snow level will be 7000′ in the morning, dropping to 5500′-6000′ when the first round of precip hits, rising to 6500′ when the heavier precip hits, and falling to 5000′ after midnight. We’ll see .5-.6” water value (WV) before midnight, likely as mixed precip (snow first, then rain, then snow), for 1-2” of snow max. Then we’ll see a dusting of new after midnight. Wind on Sunday will be SSW 10 early, becoming SW 20 by noon and staying that way.

Monday currently looks snowy right off the bat, turning flurry-y in the evening. The snow level will be around 4500′ all day, and we’ll see 3-4” of new.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a very big east gradient this morning, .24 to be exact, but it’s not exactly nuking on the river. The reason for this is that the cold pool is deeper than the Cascades, and the east wind is spilling over the mountains, instead of being confined to the Gorge. Because of that, we’re seeing E 25-30 at both Rooster and Stevenson this morning. If the models are correct, the cold pool should become more shallow this afternoon, causing the easterlies to pick up to 35-45 at Rooster and 30-35 at Stevenson. We shall see.

Expect east wind at 20-25 at Rooster on Saturday morning, fading to E 10-15 after noon. Sunday looks light and variable in the morning with light W wind in the afternoon. As of right now, Monday looks like E 10-15 early and W 13-16 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

The RMTs are really enjoying spring break and their time off. Yesterday they went mountain biking in the sunshine at Syncline. Today the RMTs are thinking about how exhausted they were from winter quarter. It’s not the workload. It’s trying to fit so many things – school, commute, exercise, meditation, volunteer activities, etc. – into a limited period of time.

Time. That’s the trouble. There’s just not enough of it. Because of this, we go through our lives thinking we “should” or “must” fit in everything. Because time is so limited, it’s important to determine which things are really necessary. Which bring us happiness? Which are must-do responsibilities? And which things are we doing out of a sense of obligation, but not true necessity?

The only person who can determine this is you – you are the only one who can evaluate the myriad of things in your life. You are the only person who can prune and simplify and create more time and freedom for yourself. Take a look at your “obligations”. Really sit with them and see which are in your benefit and which are not. Which are causing you more stress than they are worth? Maybe, just maybe, you will be able to create a little more breathing room in your life. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a clear start to the day (although it’s too dark to see that from inside my house as I’m writing this). The sky shall stay clear today. Expect temps in the mid 30’s early and the mid 50’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday starts off clear and turns overcast in the afternoon. There might be some light sprinkles overnight, and there might not. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday starts off partly cloudy with sprinkles possible, turns sunny, then goes overcast, with rain starting up after 5pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 32% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt was nothing short of epic at Syncline yesterday, and the wildflowers were out too, making the day even better. You’ll find wildflowers, ticks, and budding poison oak at Syncline today with east wind all day long. Post? Whoopdee? Personally, I’d wait one more day and let it dry out a little more, but I bet someone will go check it out today and let me know. Out on the roads, this afternoon will be east-windy. Tomorrow looks fantastic: sunny early, high overcast late, and light wind.

Upcoming Events

This morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run – 4.1 miles of jogging that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Today at 4:30pm, there’s community Hatha yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove. Coming up on Saturday, there’s a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
