Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Good morning!

Apologies for the late forecast today. The news out of Japan and the news of a 6 foot tsunami headed for Maui have kept me busy contacting friends this morning. Crossing my fingers for all of them.

Also on the disaster radar today is the slide that came down in Heather Canyon on Wednesday night or early Thursday morning: Check it out here.

Thankfully, Mt. Hood is above the tsunami zone. Today, however, it’s in the fog zone. We’ll see clouds and fog and a chance of partial clearing today before the next system hits tonight. The freezing fog freezing level today will be 1500’, going to 3500’ by late afternoon. Winds will be SW 15-20 all day, swinging more southerly late in the evening. We’ll see less than .1” water value for less than an inch of new.

Tomorrow looks snowy, with heavy snowfall between 4am and 1pm. the snow level starts at 4000’ and drops to 1500’ midday before rising to 2000’ or so by evening. Winds will be SW 20-25, rising to SW 30-35 midday and fading to SW 15-20 late. Total snowfall will be .5-.75” water value for 6-8” of new.

Sunday looks a bit wild. Models are calling for 2-3” of precip. Looks like the snow level will be at 4000’ early, rising to 5500-6000’ by 10am, rising further to 7000’ by 4pm before falling to 4000’ by 10pm. Precip will start around 10am, probably falling as rain between 11am and 5pm before switching back to snow. At this point, it looks like the heaviest precip will fall after 5pm, possibly giving us lots of new snow. Let’s wait a day and see how the models shake out. Either way, we’ll see SSW wind at 20-25 early, rising to S 40-45 by 10am, going to SSW 50-60 by 4pm and going to WSW 40-45 by 10pm.

Monday looks windy and snowy, with 3-5” of new, and Tuesday looks very snowy with temps hovering around freezing.

Have a great day today!

Temira
