3/1 Time to start your tomatoes and peppers. In other news… lots of rain for Mt. Hood.

DSC_5503-Edit
Mt. Hood did receive 4-6” of new snow last night before the temp warmed up, but all that new snow turned to muck with the arrival of rain last night. You can expect a showery day on Mt. Hood today, with heavier precip after 1pm. The snow level today will be 6500′ early, dropping to 3000′ at the tail end of this evening’s cold front. After that system moves through, we might see some orographic showers. So, we’ll see about .6” water value (WV) with the cold front, most of which will fall as rain. Call it 1-3” of new snow. Then we’ll see .1-.2” WV in orographic snowfall, for 1-2” of new. Wind will be SW 30-35 early, rising to SW 40 this afternoon and evening. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Wednesday starts out partly cloudy or sunny, quickly becoming cloudy, with precip starting sometime between 4pm and 7pm. The snow level will be 3000′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” WV in that evening weather system, and that’s going to fall as rain, maybe with a few flurries at the tail end. No accumulation. Wind Wednesday will be W 40 early, backing off to SW 15-20 by 10am and slowly building to SW 30-35 late in the evening.

Thursday looks partly cloudy and showery, but it’s hard to tell right now if those will be rain or snow showers. I’m leaning towards rain, but I may be leaning the wrong way. Or we may just see mixed precip, followed by sprinkles. Anyway, the snow level will be 5000′-6000′ all day. No significant accumulation of precipitation. Wind will be SW 20-25 early, dropping to SW 15-20 in the afternoon and evening.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see periods of rain, heavy at times, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. More details to come as the models settle on solutions.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have easterly wind to start our Tuesday, but that wind will switch around this afternoon. Expect E 30-35 at Rooster this morning, going to light and variable by noon and picking up to W 26-30 from Rowena to Arlington after 4pm. The western Gorge will see gusty 22-25 after 2pm. Wednesday starts out with some lingering light westerlies. By the afternoon, we’ll have E 20-30 at Rooster Rock. Thursday sees west wind at 5-10 early and W 10-13 in the afternoon. Friday looks like E 20-30 early and light and variable wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

As usual, I’m in the middle of processing a bunch of my crap. It’s overwhelming stuff, and I was noticing this morning how tense my body is, how I’m using my muscles to keep from feeling powerful emotions. We do this all the time – we develop strategies so we don’t feel things. We tense our bodies, we numb ourselves, we distract ourselves…

But why do we do this? Emotions are painful sometimes. They feel out of control. They can feel permanent. They can even feel life-threatening! So we stop ourselves from feeling, but we only procrastinate the inevitable. At some point, we must feel, or we’ll suffer in other ways – depression, anxiety, disconnection…

One of the keys is understanding that emotions, as painful as they may be, are not life threatening. They are not permanent. They are not even in control of us. They cannot kill us. Once you understand these things and can create a little distance from the process of feeling, you can go along for the ride, rather than being taken for a ride. You can just watch those emotions come and go, and enjoy the variety they bring to your life, whether that variety comes with joy or pain. After all, emotions are one of the coolest things about being human. They’re more powerful than the strongest drugs, right?

So, enjoy your emotions, painful and pleasant. They’re your birthright as a human. They’re temporary, and they can’t kill ya. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

Still too wet in Post. Syncline is your best bet today, but you’ll want to do it before 2pm, because the westerlies will be pretty strong this afternoon. Same goes for the rods: get it early or you’ll get it when it’s windy and wet.

Upcoming Events

Today is Tuesday. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5pm at the ballfields next to Jackson park. There’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30pm tonight, there’s community meditation with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at Yoga Samadhi. Free, and guaranteed to get you one small step further down the path to enlightenment (aka, the end of suffering).
