Good morning!

Well, first off, I totally blew the wind forecast yesterday. Lesson learned. When the upper atmosphere models show lots of NE wind, predict lots of NE wind on Mt. Hood.

Today looks windy too, but from a different direction. We’ll see the freezing level around 6000’ this morning, holding through 1pm, before dropping to 5000’ in the afternoon and then rising to 7500’ in the evening. The best chance of precip is this morning, through 1pm, and after that, we’ll have partly cloudy skies with maybe some fog/low clouds. As of 5am, it was snowing at 36 degrees on Mt. Hood. I would have called for rain, but who am I to say it can’t snow when it’s warm? So, despite the warm weather, we’ll call it snow flurries this morning with .1” or less of water value (WV) for less than 1” of new snow. Wind today will be SW 25-30 early, swinging to W 35-40 by 10am, and then going to WNW 25+ in the afternoon, and backing off to NW 10-15 in the late evening.

Friday starts off clear with low clouds, becoming cloudy by noon with precip starting between 1pm and 4pm. It’s going to be borderline: the freezing level will be 7500’ early, dropping to 6000’ by 1pm and 5000’ by 7pm, and then crashing to 1500’ by 10pm. I think this is going to come in as rain at first, switching to snow between 4pm and 7pm. The problem is the moisture is going to come in hard and heavy: .5” between 1pm and 7pm, with another .5” by 10pm and then another .4” overnight. So, call it .3-.5” rain, switching to snow, for 3-5” down low by 10pm and 8-12” up high. After 10pm, we’ll see another 4-5” of new at all ski resort elevations. Wind Friday will be W 10ish early, going to SW 10ish by 7am, 20-25 by 1pm, 30-40 by 4pm and then, late in the evening, swinging to W 30+ as the front passes.

Saturday morning brings continued snowfall, tapering off during the day and picking up Saturday night. To clarify, there should be 8-12” of new snow on the ground Saturday morning. The snow level will be at 1000’, holding all day. We’ll see snow flurries all day, for .1-.3” water value by 4pm, for another 2-4” of new. Wind will be W 30-35 all day, going to WSW 35 at 4pm as the next system approaches.

By Sunday 4am, it’ll be snowing hard and blowing hard, with the snow level around 1000’. We’ll have about .6-.8” water value Saturday night into Sunday morning, for 8-10” of new light and fluffy snow. We’ll get another .2-.3” during the day, for another 3-4” by 1pm, when we’ll see partly cloudy skies. Wind will be W 35-40 early, swinging to WNW20-30+ around 10am, holding for much of the day, and fading to WNW late in the evening.

Monday looks clear and sunny. At this point, Tuesday and Wednesday are looking warm and a bit on the wet side.
