Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

August is starting out two-for-two for wind, and it’s not looking like the wind is going to disappear any time soon. Although gradients are a little weaker this morning than they’ve been for the last few days, there’s still .10 from Portland to The Dalles, and there are still marine clouds in the western Gorge. This setup is enough for 22-25 at the Hatchery and 17-21 at Stevenson, Viento and the Sandbar this morning, along with low twenties at Lyle and Doug’s this afternoon. As the clouds burn off in Portland, winds might fade a bit for an extended midday lull near Hood River.

Tomorrow looks similar to today, with just a little less marine layer and a little less wind. Even so, there will still be plenty of wind all day tomorrow for windsurfing and kiting, and the same goes from Wednesday through the end of the week. .

If you need something to do tonight, remember the casual Alternative Ride out of Mountain View Cycles at 6:30, now complete with a weekly raffle. The giveaway this week is a free bike fitting, which is a great thing if your knees are starting to hurt from your mileage.

Also tonight is the Hammerhead ride, leaving Mountain View Cycles at 5pm. This ride is apparently not so insanely fast as it used to be, but you’d still better be on your game if you don’t want to get dropped. And for something way more mellow, check out free tai chi at 6pm at Wilson Park.

Coming up tomorrow, ride from Hood River to Parkdale for tacos at Eliot Glacier. Give Mountain View a call for more information on that ride.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
