Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Saturday sees clouds down low and clear sky up high with the possibility of a few inches of snow in the evening. The snow level will be less than 1000′ all day long. Wind on Saturday will be NW 35 during the daylight hours, becoming WNW 25 in the evening. Good weather for Santa to be cruising his sleigh across the Pacific Northwest. Not so great for a slopeside menorah – the wind will blow out the candles.

Sunday, Christmas, looks sunny on the hill and cloudy in the valleys. The free air freezing level will be at the surface all day. Wind on the hill will be W 15 in the morning and light and variable in the afternoon and evening. Next chance for a snowstorm on Mt. Hood is on Tuesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Expect east wind at Rooster Rock at 30-35 this morning with 20-25 at Steven’s Locks. By noon, we’ll have light and variable wind. Models suggest light westerlies late in the day, but that’s a maybe in my book. Friday starts with E 15-20, turns light and variable in the afternoon, and goes to W 13-16 (maybe) overnight. Saturday looks like W 13-16 early, fading to 10-13 in the afternoon. Sunday looks light and variable in the morning with E 20-25 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I don’t have anything to say this morning. I think it’s because my toes are freezing cold. Maybe walking outside barefoot in 20 degree weather wasn’t such a great call, eh? If you’re somewhere warm, please go walk outside barefoot for me, preferably in the sand. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It appears to be partly cloudy out there this morning, perhaps with a little high overcast. Expect cloudy to increase today with cold rain mixed with snow from 6pm on through Friday. If you live above 1000′, you’ll get a couple inches. Temps will be in the low 20’s this morning and mid 30’s this afternoon. East wind early, light wind later. 2% chance of evening rainbows. Friday brings wet snow showers. It’s going to be a close call at river level, but folks above 500′ will see 2-3” between 2pm and 10pm. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light east wind early, light west wind (maybe) in the evening. 4% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy during the day with occasional flurries or sprinkles in the evening. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 4% chance of rainbows. It’s possible we’ll see a little snow Sunday night, but unlikely. The next chance for a Big Mess is Tuesday morning.

Road and Mountain Biking

You can ride your bike if you have a fat bike. Heck, you might actually be able to get out for a road ride today, especially on the Petersburg Loop where there’s no gravel. As a matter of fact, if you’re careful, you can head out for a ride in the Heights of Hood River. I did yesterday, and hardly encountered any ice. But then again, I was riding my city bike with flat pedals, just in case. Just a quick reminder about riding this time of year: if it was below freezing last night and it is above freezing now, don’t ride trails that aren’t under the canopy. Open-air trails are subject to freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride after a thaw has happened, you will cause massive trail damage.

Upcoming Events

There’s pickleball tonight from 5pm to 9pm at May Street Elementary. There’s community yoga at 6pm at Yoga Samadhi. At 6:30, there’s Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
