Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Saturday sees the snow level at the surface (in the Gorge, anyway) in the morning and near 2000′ in the afternoon. Models currently suggest a few inches of snow during the day on Saturday with SW wind in the 15-25 range. The next system arrives on Sunday morning. This one looks likely to bring 5-8” of snow.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s pretty hard to do a wind forecast for the Gorge when the models are way, way off on what’s happening. So, how about E 40-50 this morning, fading to E 15-20 this afternoon and going light and variable tonight. Models suggest light westerlies on Thursday, but I’m not buying it. How about light and variable. East wind returns Thursday night with E 40-50 on Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I don’t really have much to say this morning because I’m totally in awe of this weather. I have about 1/2” of ice on my car, and the poor folks in the western Gorge have 1” or more of ice. I can’t make it to school, people can’t make it to work, and there’s damage aplenty out there.

This is a good reminder to each of us to be accepting of the circumstances of others. While those of you in Portland are basking in the 40’s, we’re still receiving freezing rain. Much like a sizeable weather difference can be incomprehensible, it can be incomprehensible to understand when someone’s experience (emotional, financial, circumstantial) is vastly different than our own.

It can be hard to evoke compassion when we just don’t get it. We can ask non-accusatory questions in order to try and understand someone unlike us. A good one is, “What’s that like for you?” The phrase, “Tell me more,” also works well, and has the added bonus of making someone feel like you truly care.

It’s not just about differences in weather – on the inside, we’re all different people. Make an attempt to understand others just like you make and attempt to empathize with their weather difficulties, and the world will be a better place. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cold and icy morning in the Gorge, and the freezing rain will continue today. Expect .2-.3” ice this morning, a break midday, and another round of freezing rain tonight. Models think we’ll be above freezing, but I don’t. Models also suggest tonight’s rain will stay west of Hood River, for .5” additional ice near Cascade Locks. Models think we’ll be above freezing Thursday. Meh. Doesn’t much matter, because we’ll drop back below freezing after sunset. Just a few sprinkles on Thursday, though. Expect temps in the 20’s on Friday with 2-3” of snow, followed by another 2-3” of snow on Saturday.
