Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies of the moderate to strong variety continue through at least next Saturday. A front system moving across the region on Monday morning has wind under-performing the gradients. At dawn, those gradients were .17 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc). As this front moves through during the morning, we should see the wind steady out. Early wind will be 5-10 near cloudy Stevenson, 20-25 from Viento to The Dalles, and, inexplicably, 30ish near Maryhill with teens farther east.
By late morning, we should have 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus. Spots without sensors (Mosier, Avery, Celilo) could end up even windier. Nothing to do with the sensors – those location tend to over-perform in this setup. Looks like Arlington will hold in the 16-19 range today. River flow is 297kcfs (experts only for the Maryhill stretch) and temp is 58 degrees.
A weak little low spins off the coast on Tuesday. Result: decreased gradients and increased gustiness to the wind. Morning westerlies start at 14-17 from Viento to Hood River. Afternoon wind: 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier and gusty 20-23 from Rowena to Rufus with 10-13 near Arlington.
A trough of low pressure and cooler air approaches from the NW on Wednesday. This is one of those tricky situations (like yesterday), where massive gradients won’t necessarily result in giant sensor readings. The morning starts with west wind at 7-10 through the entire Gorge. Afternoon wind looks like gusty 25-28 from Stevenson all the way to Threemile. Models like the idea of continued mid to upper 20’s westerlies Thursday through Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking
If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the top. Lower Lewis River is open. Despite advice to the contrary, Red Hill Road was open to bikes on Saturday, 6/1. Proof is on The Strava.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
