Gorge Wind Forecast

The forecast for the next week contains a series of weather systems (it is fall, after all). Gusty west wind of varying strength is the general picture through the extended forecast.

Sunday starts out with gusty 18-23 in the far west Gorge (Multnomah to Viento) along with heavy rain. As this weather system moves through, we’ll see the wind fill in out east. You can expect gusty 22-26 from Avery to Arlington today with gusty 10-15ish in from Stevenson to The Dalles once this system moves through. Rain, or at least showers, continue in the western Gorge all day. River flow is 92,800cfs and river temp is 58 degrees.

Monday sees continued showers as low pressure sits over the Gorge. We’ll have west wind at 5-10 everywhere to start the day, holding in the western Gorge. Areas east of The Dalles pick up to 18-22 in the afternoon. Tuesday starts with W 5-10 and picks up to W 12-15 under partly cloudy sky. Forget about Wednesday: we’re looking at another round of heavy rainfall.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Random Morning Thoughts

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and Timberline received a couple inches of snow last night. Light snowfall will continue for the next couple of days above 4500′ before being washed away in warm rain on Wednesday.

For Sunday, expect decreasing, but steady, snowfall all day long. The snow level will be 4500′. Models don’t seem to be handling reality all that well on Sunday morning, so let’s wing it. About .1” to .3” water value (WV) falls between 5am and 5pm, for 1-3” of snow. Another .1” WV falls overnight. That’s one more inch at 10:1. Wind: WSW 35 early becoming SW 20 and then W 30 after midnight.

Monday brings additional light snowfall that decreases after midngith. Snow level: 4000′ early, 5000′ midday, 4500′ after midnight. About .1” WV falls daytime, for an inch of new. That’s followed by a trace overnight. Wind: W 30 early, WNW 20 for the rest of the day and night.

Tuesday looks partly cloudy early, mostly cloudy later, and rainy after 11pm. Snow level: 4500′ early rising to 10,000′ overnight. Models disagree on rainfall amounts, maxing out with .6” overnight on the GFS. Wind: WNW 20 rising to WNW 45 overnight. Models disagree on the storm track Wednesday. If it’s a direct hit on Mt. Hood, strong NW flow will cause orographic enhancement of rainfall, for a gully washer of a storm. No confirmation of this yet, however.

Road and Mountain Biking

Now it is too wet to ride your bike in Post without sliding and crashing and also, most likely, damaging the trails due to muddy conditions. If you want to try another location, be advised that the snow level is currently about 4500′. Upcoming Post Canyon trail work parties (all meet at Family Man at 9:30am): October 27, November 4, November 17. Upcoming Hood River County work party: October 27th, 9am at Post Flats Staging Area.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events: community yoga at 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon. All-ages touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina. Today’s the Scary Run in Washougal at 8am (WET) and Cyclocross races in Cascade Locks from 8:30 to 3pm (MUDDY). If you want to watch those races and cheer for the locals, the Dirty Fingers tent will be available to protect you from the rain. I believe they will also have warm beverages. Next Sunday, horror of horrors, is the switch to Daylight Savings Time.
