Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

There’s more sunshine on Mt. Hood this morning, but today it’s quite cold, even in my office: 16 degrees at 5000’. Brrrrrrrrrr! It will stay chilly and clear today, with the freezing level near sea level. Winds will be NE 20-30 early, going to E 20-30 by 1pm.

Tomorrow looks sunny, with the possibility of some high clouds. The freezing level will be at the surface, but temprs will be in the 20’s on the mountain, briefly warming to the low 30’s around 1pm. Winds will be variable at 5-10mph.

Wednesday morning brings more sunshine, along with some low clouds, with high clouds moving in during the afternoon. The temp at 5000’ will hover around 32 in the morning with the free air freezing level at 1000’. By 10pm, the freezing level will drop to the surface, at least in the Gorge. Winds will be NW 10-15 early, swinging to SW 10-20 in the afternoon.

Snow will start around 1am Thursday. If you live in the Gorge, expect 1-2” by 7am, and another 2-3” during the day. On the mountain, 1-2” will fall by 7am with another 4” or so by 1pm before snowfall tapers off.

Expect another inversion with warm mountain temperatures on Friday and clear skies for the weekend.

If you’re looking for Gorge wind, you’re nuts. It’s freezing. For those of you interested in mountain biking, the Hood River Country trails meeting that was scheduled tonight has been cancelled and moved to January 17th.

Have an awesome day today!
