Wednesday. Wind, followed by rain.

DSC_3361
There’s not much wind and not much gradient out there to start this Wednesday, but that will change this afternoon (guaranteed, because I will be unavailable for wind chasing this afternoon). The 7am gradients were just .04 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) with the river temp at 71 degrees, flow at The Dalles at 103kcfs, and crashing fish counts of 2758 Chinook and 432 Steelhead on Tuesday. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

As a slow-moving cold front approaches the coast this afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up through the Gorge. Until that happens, we’ll see this: west wind at 5-10 everywhere for the first few hours of the morning. We should see the westerlies pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe Mosier too, around noon. As that cold front begins to shift inland in the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to Arlington, probably after 2pm. This is one of those situations where Swell isn’t going to be the longest-lasting spot. If you’re going there, move fast. Otherwise, try Doug’s, Avery, or Arlington.

Thursday starts off light, with just 5-10 or so. As the next weather system approaches in the afternoon (and this one looks like a doozy for this time of year), we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 15-18 after 2pm, first at Stevenson, and then moving quickly through the beaches. The wind will likely fade quickly too.

Friday sees the remnants of that weather system moving through in the morning, leaving the western Gorge cloudy and rainy with rainbows and westerlies at 5-10. As the system moves east, the wind will quickly build to 24-27 everywhere east of the clouds, probably east of Mosier. Under the clouds, you can expect gusty 10-15.

As of right now, Saturday looks like 15-18 and Sunday looks like 12-15, but that, of course, could change in the next three days. I’m predicting weather here, not the future. Come to think of it, I’m worse at predicting the future, so please don’t ask me about it.

Random Morning Thoughts

Last night I was listening to a talk by one of my monastic friends. He was talking about faith as it applies to Buddhism. I was surprised to hear him say how many people in that community don’t actually believe in the idea that you can achieve freedom from unnecessary suffering. I don’t consider myself a Buddhist, but given how much my suffering has been reduced (like by 95%) due to meditation and therapy, I believe it’s possible to end suffering. Internal work isn’t a case of diminishing returns, in my experience – it’s an exponential process of healing and positive change.

This small piece of faith raises a bigger issue of faith in general. I don’t think it’s possible to achieve what we don’t believe in. That could be success, love, happiness, peace of mind, friends, etc. Of course, just having faith that we will have those things doesn’t guarantee them. But if we believe something isn’t possible, we’re not going to see it when it happens (much like seeing a bear on a bike ride – ya gotta believe it’s a possibility, or you’re going to miss it).

A very tricky piece of having faith is holding it without clinging to the thing for which you hope. Take love – if you believe it’s possible and really, really want it, you’ll repeatedly and randomly experience disappointment when it doesn’t materialize in the form you expect. So, you have to learn to have faith while letting go, as much as possible, of desire.

Yeah, it’s tricky. And I don’t claim to have mastered this. It’s probably the work of a lifetime. But hey, what else do you have to do with this lifetime? You’ve only got one that’s certain – you might as well have faith rather than its opposite, cynicism. Or at least have more of the former than the latter. Have an awesome day. May you be free of suffering.
