Tuesday. Rain for the valley. Snow for the mountain. Wind for the Gorge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Happy snowy Tuesday, everyone! Remember that Timberline is your only lift-serve skiing today, but you can hike at Meadows if you want. Just remember that avalanche hazard will exist, even within the ski resort boundaries, and there ain’t nobody to come rescue you if something happens. Ride safe! Looks like T-line picked up about a foot of snow in the last 24 hours and Meadows about half a foot. There’s the difference 500′ will make.

Today will be partly cloudy in the morning, cloudy in the afternoon, and snowy or mixed rain with snow overnight. Yesterday’s model run was certain we’d see rain, predicting a 7500′ snow level. The latest run is calling for 6000′ max and quite a bit less precip than yesterday’s run. So, well, you know… tricky. We’ll see no accumulation before 5pm. Between 5pm today and 5am Wednesday, the mountain will see .7-1.0” water value (WV), for 5-8” of wet new snow, possibly mixed with rain at times. Wind will be NW 10 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, and W 35 overnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Wednesday looks quite snowy, as strong west wind enhances snowfall rates. Orographics, yo. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 4000′ by 8am, and 1500′ after midnight. We’ll see .6-.8” WV during the day, for 6-8” of new snow. Another .4-.6” WV falls overnight, for 4-6” of additional accumulation. This snow quality should be pretty good. Wind on Wednesday will be W 30 in the morning, WNW 35 in the afternoon, and a blistering WNW 40 after midnight.

Thursday looks snowy during the day, partly cloudy in the afternoon, and clear overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. The mountain will pick up .4-.5” WV during the day, for 4-6” of fluffy, dry powder. Wind on Thursday will be WNW 40 for much of the day, W 30 in the afternoon and evening, and NW 20 after midnight. Friday currently looks sunny.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light westerlies through the entire Gorge this morning, 10-13 or so everywhere, and not much will change today. A weather system approaches late in the afternoon, and that will bump up the averages just a bit in the eastern Gorge. You can expect up-and-down 10-13 all day today with gusty 15-18 east of The Dalles late this afternoon and evening.

Wednesday looks interesting: a weather system moves through in the morning and high pressure builds off the coast starting midday. That will increase synoptic-scale gradients and set us up for a windy afternoon. Models are bouncing around a bit on the exact wind speed and location. That said, you can expect W 30-35 east of the low clouds tomorrow, probably from Avery to Arlington, possibly at Threemile too. The western Gorge will be showery and partly cloudy, with gusty 21-26. River flow is 331kcfs and river temp is 49 degrees. Air temp will be in the mid 50’s on Wednesday.

Thursday sees the high pressure start to push inland, but we’ll still have enough gradient for a windy day. Expect Dawn Patrol east of The Dalles at 22-25. By mid-morning, we should see 26-30 from Mosier east to Arlington. Once again, the western Gorge is likely to stay cloud-bound, with gusty westerlies at 19-23. Friday currently looks like 21-24, strongest from Viento to Rowena.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m taking a group counseling class at school this quarter. In that class, we talk a lot about “parataxic distortions” which is, in short, when we expect others to behave in certain ways based on our past experiences. A large portion of our parataxic distortions come from childhood experiences – from our caregivers, we learn to expect people to react to us in certain ways, and we unconsciously expect the same from others later in our lives.

Sometimes these can be positive – we come to see people as trustworthy, loving, and receptive. If our family didn’t embody those qualities, we’re likely to expect different interactions, quite possibly negative or painful interactions.

That brings me to my point. I commonly hear people say, “Stop blaming stuff on your parents, and move on.” Unfortunately, we relate to the world in the ways we learned from our caregivers. These patterns are unconscious, and we can’t just stop them. We can, however, build awareness and learn to behave in different ways.

Blaming our families for our fuckedupedness isn’t helpful. Being angry, while part of the grieving process, isn’t helpful if it becomes a life-long pattern. We can be compassionate towards ourselves and recognize the impact our families have had on us. That’s healthy and honest. At that point, we can take responsibility for doing our own work in order to have a happier, healthier life. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy out there this morning, which is a hell of a lot better than the wintry look the Gorge was sporting yesterday. Expect rain to start up around 4pm today and continue overnight. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s this afternoon. Light westerlies. 72% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks rainy through 5pm and showery after that. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks showery in the morning and dry in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. 29% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Given that we received almost half an inch of rain yesterday, the only place dry enough to ride will be Syncline. Everything else will be wet, muddy, and susceptible to damage by your tires. Road biking looks good this morning, but rain will move in mid-afternoon. In other news, there’s a trail work party at Sandy Ridge on Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include a free dance exercise class at the Whtie Salmon Grange at 11, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5, and meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30.

This weekend, starting Friday, brings the Mountain Film Festival at the Skylight Theater. There’s a trail work party at Sandy Ridge Saturday and the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race at McCubbins gulch on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
