Gorge Wind Forecast

The amazing, super-nuking extended forecast has faded away, but there’s still a chance for you to get into the 44 degree Columbia over the next few days. We’re starting off Thursday with gradients of .11 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). Dawn Patrol wind speeds were all over the place, with single digits at Swell and mid-30’s at Rufus (where the flow is 376kcfs, an awful lot for that section of river).

As the day warms up (high of 56 for Hood River), we’ll see W 27-32 from Mosier to Rufus. Areas west of Mosier will likely stay partly cloudy today, with up-and-down westerlies at 18-23. East of Rufus is a bit of a crapshoot today – this setup favors the near-east Gorge, but it’s likely Roosevelt will see 23-26 today.

Friday, although not so windy, does look like an amazing day: warm and sunny. We’ll see westerlies through the whole Gorge at 10-13 early. Models suggest we’ll see the wind back off to 5-10 or less in the afternoon, with the wind focused on the Swell to Mosier stretch. That said, it’s quite likely, given the setup, that the wind will beat the models, giving us 10-13 all day near Hood River.

Looking at Saturday, we have an excellent setup for wind, with high pressure sitting steady off the coast. We’ll start off the morning with 10-13. As the day warms up (high of 60), we’ll see 23-26 from Mosier eastward to Arlington. Once again, the western Gorge will likely stay cloudy, with gusty 18-22. As of Thursday morning, models suggest 24-28 on Sunday and gusty 22-25 on Monday, but that’s a long ways out and things could change.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the cool things about being human is having a vast array of emotions. Most of us have learned to categorize our feelings as good and bad, pleasant and unpleasant, but those are just outside judgments we place on them.

If you take a little time to study your emotions deeply, you’ll quickly realize how fascinating and complex they are, even those that feel painful. Each emotion comes with nuanced bodily sensations, giving us the ability to differentiate between, for example, happiness and contentment. (And if you find you don’t have such a varied encyclopedia of feelings, you can practice studying them and increase your vocabulary!).

One of the tricks to enjoying all of your emotions is to embrace them. Find something interesting about even those painful feelings. That’ll do at least a couple of helpful things – you’ll find yourself less overwhelmed by hurt, and you’ll engage your curiosity, which will make you feel just a little better. You’re pretty amazing, no matter what you’re feeling. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Update: Gorge 400 out of Wyeth, despite multiple reports to the contrary, is most definitely not open to bikes yet. There are sections of the trail buried under 4′ of snow from this winter’s avalanches. You could, theoretically hike the 400 (I went running there yesterday). Other than that, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Sandy Ridge are open.

Upcoming Events

There’s a community dance-exercise class at 11am at the White Salmon Grange. There’s community yoga tonight at 6pm at Samadhi, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6:30. Coming up Friday morning, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run. A 4 mile jog at 7am gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Healthy. Very healthy.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Gorge Roubaix bike race is on Saturday, and the Gorge Gravel Grinder ride is on Sunday. That should be awesome with 30-35mph west wind on Sunday. Pacific Hermitage is having a garden party on Saturday – meal at 11, work party at 1, tea with monks at 3.

Have an awesome day today!
