Gorge Wind Forecast

As I said on Tuesday’s forecast, this is the time of year when the models aren’t all that reliable. It also seems that this is the time of year when Temira isn’t all that reliable – with needing to be at my internship at 8am many days, I’m going to have to do lots of two-day forecasts. This one, for example, is for Thursday and Friday.

For Thursday, we started off with gradients of .04 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). Wind speeds on the river were generally in the single digits to low double digits, with low teens near swell. The overall picture today has a trough of low pressure moving eastward and high pressure building off the coast. Although models aren’t predicting much in the way of wind, 13-16 this afternoon between Cascade Locks and Mosier seems reasonable, with the strongest and most reliable wind near Swell.

Friday starts off with light wind and chilly temps. The GFS has the Gorge with light wind all day long, but I think we’ll see westerlies at 10-13 between Cascade Locks and Swell by late morning with 10-13 between Cascade Locks and Mosier in the afternoon.

Same thing goes on Saturday: not much wind in the models. I think we’ll see 5-10 early and 13-16 in the afternoon between Cascade Locks and Mosier. Again, Sunday is a similar situation. Light wind early and 15-18 in the afternoon, strongest from Cascade Locks to Hood River with 10-13 or so near Mosier.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have a lot of conversations with people about how they can feel better. I think one of the underlying principles is “wisdom”, the capacity to understand on a deep level how your actions impact others and yourself. Empathy is certainly part of this, but wisdom allows us to make choices that benefit rather than harm.

Developing wisdom can be a journey. My belief is that it needs to be built on some sort of moral code. Unfortunately, experiences can lead us to develop a moral code that doesn’t support the kind treatment of others. We can build a life around what I’ll call a ‘faulty moral compass’, one that we’ve developed to protect ourselves. We are then blind to the negative impact of our actions – we justify them by our moral code.

How do we know if this is the case? I think that one way is to study our actions on an emotional level. When we are in the process of decision-making, what emotions are we responding to? Fear? Anger? Love? Generosity? When we contemplate possible outcomes, what emotions arise? Anger? Relief? A sense of connection?

If we can start to shift our choices towards those that bring us into connection with others, towards emotions such as happiness, peacefulness, and joy, we can start to see where we might want to change our moral compass. Then we’ll be more awesome, and other people will treat us better, leading to a positive feedback loop. Have an awesome day.

Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday will probably start out with a Nothing cloud but should turn sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. No rainbows. Saturday may have some scattered Nothing early, but will become sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday tops out in the mid 70’s.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

According to a report I received 36 hours ago, Post Canyon was actually too muddy to ride. Don’t worry, tho – it’ll be great this weekend! SDS and Broughton Lands reopen tomorrow. In the past, this has also meant that Kreps lands will reopen, but I don’t have confirmation of that. This means that Whoopdee Trail, East Ridge / Hood River Mountain, and Underwood will all reopen Friday morning. There’s 8-10” of snow at 6000′ now, so I think you can write Gunsight Ridge off until we have a series of warm days.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the premiere of the kiteboarding movie “the Bubble” at the Skylight theatre, a fundraiser for Cascade Locks businesses at Springhouse Cellars, and the Rivers for All launch party at All Adventures Rafting. Dirty Fingers will be having the Post n’ Pint and Post n’ Pinot rides today at 5pm to celebrate the reopening of Post Canyon. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run: jog or walk 4 miles and get a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
