Gorge Wind Forecast

This is going to have to be a quick forecast as I have to get on the road to Portland and spend all my waking hours in classes there today. I’m hoping I’ll have enough time tomorrow morning to get you a forecast as well, or at least an evening update tonight. So… An upper low moving towards BC this morning is accompanied by a weak cold front that’s moving inland. This has already pushed clouds inland, and will probably continue to add to the clouds through late morning after which the clouds will burn back. Gradients at 4am were .08 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc) with wind speeds generally in the upper teens to low twenties everywhere. We’ll see continued 18-22 through the whole Gorge this morning with inconsistent 21-25 this afternoon from Cascade Locks to Arlington.

The next could of days are tricky in terms of creating a forecast because the models are in disagreement over the wind strength. In addition, Friday especially is a setup where the wind can beat the predicctions. Friday’s GFS suggest we’ll have a light west wind morning folled by a 12-15mph west wind afternoon from Cascade Locks to The Dalles. I think it’s possibly, but by no means certain, that we could see wind speeds closer to 19-22 in the afternoon.

Looking at Saturday, we have the same problem. Models suggest light westerlies to start the day with 10-13 from Cascade Locks to Mosier in the afternoon. As a thermal low builds in the desert late in the day and high pressure builds offshore, it’s quite possible that reality will slay the models with westerlies at 16-19. Don’t count on it, but know that the models could be wrong here.

Things get even more difficult to forecast on Sunday as there’s been wild inconsistency in what the models have to say due to a developing offshore low. We really can’t give a prediction for the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout (Stevenson to Hood River, open to ALL downwind craft) until models agree a bit more. That said, we have trended away from an easterly prediction and a nuclear west prediction towards something more along the lines of 17-20 on Sunday afternoon. Eek. That was not quick. Gotta go!

Jones, Sauvie’s, Coast Beta Test Forecast

Jones Thursday: 5-10. Friday: 13-16. Saturday: 12-15, maybe. Sauvie’s thursday: 7-10. Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 13-16. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: no/no/15-20, SW swell 2′ at 12 seconds. Friday: no/no/20-25, NW 2′ @ 12. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/35+, W 3′ @ 8. Sunday: super windy everywhere on the coast.

Random Morning Thoughts

If I don’t get in the car and get going, I’m going to be late for my class and that 4:30 wakeup will be for naught. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy this morning, and the clouds may actually deepen before burning off later. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 70’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday looks sunny and warm: temps will be near 60 early and near 90 in the afternoon. Light wind. There’s a slight chance of a thundershower on Sunday afternoon, so expect a pretty sunset.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

All the mtb trails locally are open. This will change next week when Hospital Hill and Whoopdee will likely close for the summer due to fire danger. Ride them now. Moto is now done for the season in Hood River County, as we are at IFPL 3. Today looks like a great day for road biking – light wind.

Upcoming Events

This weekend is filled with events: the Meljes 24 championships in Cascade Locks, the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest in Stevenson with the pro contest on the schedule today, the amatuer contest scheduled tomorrow, and the blowout for all downwind floating objects on Sunday. There are also hundreds of downwind paddlers running shuttles between Viento and Hood River today and tomorrow for the Gorge Downwind Champs. There’s a windsurfing race at Hood River’s Event Site tomorrow and a slider jam on the spit in the evening.

Every Friday at 7am is the Kickstand Donut run where jogging four miles gets you a cup of coffee and a donut. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest party is at River City tonight. There’s a work party at Starvation Creek tomorrow from 9 to 1, and the movie Trolls at The Dalles Movies in the party tomorrow night at dusk.

Going backwards… the weekly Thursday events include a community dance exercise class at 11 at the White Salmon Grange, $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Valley Adult Center at 2:30 and at Our Saviour Church in Bingen (free) at 6:30. There’s the Post n’ Pint (race-pace) and Post n’ Pinot (women only) bike rides at Dirty Fingers at 5:30 (they earn you a free pint of beer upon completion. At 5:45, threre’s the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle on the Lower White Salmon. There’s community sailing in Cascade Locks at 6, yoga at Samadhi at 6 (by donation), and that’s it!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
