Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Thanksgiving, and it’s still raining on Mt. Hood, which has washed away a good bit of the base. Oh well. Good thing it’s early in winter! For Thursday, the snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight, but the precip will have finished by then. The mountain will receive 1/2”-1” of rain during the day, followed by .1” water value (WV) tonight, for up to an inch of new snow. Wind will be SW 30 in the morning, WSW 40+ in the afternoon and evening, and W 30 after midnight.

Friday starts off partly cloudy with low cloudy and a few flurries. More clouds move in during the afternoon, along with warmer air. The snow level will be 3000′ during the day and 8000′ after midnight. .1” WV falls as snow during the day, for about an inch of snow. Wind will be W 30 in the morning and SW 15-20 in the evening.

Saturday starts off cloudy and turns showery or misty after 10am. Heavier rain arrives after midnight. The snow level will be 8000′ during the day, 10,000′ when the heavy rain hits, and 5000′ after midnight, after the rain passes. About 1/10” rain falls during the day and 1/2” after midnight. Wind Saturday will be SW 20 early, SW 35 in the afternoon, and SW 50+ overnight.

The snow level drops quickly on Sunday mornign after the rain moves through, and light snowfall continues during the day. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. About .2” WV falls during the day, for 2′ of new snow. Another .3” falls overnight, for 3-4” of drier snow. Wind will be SW 50+ early, slowly dropping to SW 20 in the afternoon and turning to NW 40 overnight. Monday looks snowy.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s Thanksgiving. While we’ve linked this holiday to certain foods and time spent with good friends, we can make of it whatever we like. I like to make it a day of reflection on things I’m grateful for (including good friends and pie, of course!).

Gratitude isn’t just a woo-woo concept. Being truly grateful for something, anything, warms the heart, sends happy chemicals into the brain, and relaxes the nervous system. If you would like those sorts of feelings to arise spontaneously more often, you can develop a gratitude practice. You can extend it to days other than Thanksgiving, just like you can eat pumpkin or apple pie at any time of year (thank god for that!).

Try this out: any time you think of it today, spend ten seconds really being grateful for something. Let yourself feel all the feelings that are associated with gratitude. Nobody has to know you’re doing this. You can do it with a secret smile on your face. And then notice if you feel better than you did ten seconds prior. I hope your holiday is filled with love, joy and gratitude. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

It is way, way too wet and muddy to ride. If you ride, you will damage trails. Please, please don’t. You could try some gravel roads or a rails-to-trails such as the Klickitat or Deschutes. Mark your calendars for the HRATS annual fundraiser at Double Mountain on December 14th.
