Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s a snowy morning on Mt. Hood, and the snowfall will continue as a low pressure system slides across the state of Oregon today. At this point, it looks like that system will stay far enough south to keep the temps cold enough for snow on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be around 5000′ for much of the daylight hours, dropping to 2500′ around 4pm and 1000′ after midnight. Approximately .5” water value (WV) will fall during the day, for 4-5” of heavy new snow. Snowfall tapers off after 4pm, with no accumulation overnight. Wind today will be light SW early, rising to SW 35+ by daybreak, holding during the day, and turning to W 35 around 4pm. After that, the wind will fade.

Tuesday also looks snowy as another low pressure system crosses Oregon. This one is predicted to be even further south, keeping temps even colder on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2000′ by early afternoon, and 500′ after midnight. Approximately .7” WV falls between 4am and 4pm, for 7-8” of new snow. After 4pm, there will be dry weather with a chance of a few inconsequential flurries. Wind on Tuesday will be SE 10 in the morning, NW 25 in the afternoon, and W 20 after midnight.

Wednesday looks colder with less snowfall. The snow level will be around 500′ in the morning and 1000′ in the afternoon, dropping to the surface by Thursday morning. Although it will likely be mostly cloudy all day, there will only be light snow flurries with up to an inch of accumulation in the 24 hour period. Wind on Wednesday will be W 20 in the morning, W 15 in the afternoon, and NW 10 after midnight.

Thursday looks much like Wednesday: cold with just a few flurries. Expect light and variable wind on Thursday. The next chance for significant snowfall is Sunday afternoon.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 25-30 this morning abruptly switches to W 20-23 in the western gorge and 27-31 in the eastern Gorge after 1pm. The west wind will only last for 2-3 hours. Tuesday starts with E 20-25 and switches to W 13-16 after 3pm. Wednesday looks like W 10-13 through the entire Gorge all day long.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m feeling frustrated this morning after seeing so many articles speculating on the mental health of our president. A significant number of people (30%+) deal with mental illness at some point in life.

When we imply that 45’s bigotry, hatred, impulsivity, and lying are caused by mental illness, we instill more fear and stigma for people who struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. We also abdicate responsibility for such behaviors and speech by blaming it on mental illness.

People who argue that the president should be removed from office because he may be mentally ill undermine the rights of others who struggle with mental illness. Suggesting that people should pass a mental health test to take a job is reckless. It’s a slippery slope to limiting the rights of an oppressed group. Such suggestions also do not take into account the fact that mental illnesses, much like colds and viruses, have medications and cures, and that the symptoms fluctuate day by day and hour by hour.

Mental illness doesn’t cause bigotry. Mental illness doesn’t cause people to twist the truth. People speak and make choices based on values, and people behave based on those values. If someone expresses values you don’t like, don’t blame it on mental illness. Blame it on choices and values that differ from your own, and allow that person to take full responsibility for their actions and words. You’re awesome, whether you struggle with mental illness or not. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. There are reports that the Petersburg Loop in The Dalles is clear of snow… In addition to that, I was jogging in Odell yesterday, and there’s not much gravel on the roads up there.

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. I get the mental illness thing, but just like we probably shouldn’t allow mentally ill people to have or use guns, we shouldn’t give a mentally ill person the keys to the most powerful nation in the world. Some things are important and require you to be of a sane mind in order to occupy that job or perform that task. For example if someone’s mental illness prevented them from driving you wouldn’t allow them to drive anyways just for the sake of not wanting to undermine their mental illness. Doing so would put other peoples’ life at jeopardy. Of course we should support them to help them overcome their issues, but surely they become disqualified for certain tasks until they are of the right mind. A good example is the Germanwings airplane that the pilot purposefully crashed into the mountain in 2015 – “The crash was deliberately caused by the co-pilot, Andreas Lubitz, who had previously been treated for suicidal tendencies and declared “unfit to work” by a doctor.” So are you saying that a pilot who has hundreds or peoples’ lives in his or her hand should not have to pass a mental health test?
