Gorge Wind Forecast

Well, folks, today’s your day for big wind. Once again, we’ll have a little weather system messing with things midday, but there will still be plenty of marine air, offshore high pressure, and cross-Cascade temp difference to get you on the water. Lesser wind is forecast for the next few days – upper teens to low 20’s. Models have all sorts of things to say about wind potential on Sunday and Monday, but “probably windy” looks like a decent forecast for now.

Wednesday kicks off with pressures of 30.11/29.96/29.90 for gradients of .15 and .06. Survey says… Anywhere between Stevenson and Rufus. Forecast models say… it’s ripping to start the day at Viento, Mosier, Maryhill, and Arlington. We should see brief 25-28 from Stevenson to Hood River this morning before a drop to 17-20. Stevenson should hold in the mid 20’s all day once the clouds burn back. When the Corridor drop happens, turn your attention eastward for 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington. Also turn your attention to La Vaquita Taqueria in Mosier, Tadka Indian cart (Coastal parking lot) and Amayah’s Indian cart (just east of Biggs). Because if you’re driving east, you might as well eat well! River flow yesterday was 239-285kcfs, river temp is 59F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River.

Lesser offshore high pressure and an approaching system on Thursday knocks down the wind speeds to something more manageable for people of all skill levels. We start with 14-17 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at Stevenson and light wind east of Mosier. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 74F. A similar setup on Friday leads to 17-20 early and 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery in the afternoon. High temp: 77F.

For the weekend, we’ve got significant uncertainty, but a decent chance of wind. With hotter weather forecast inland than for the Willy Valley, we should stick with onshore flow. Ensembles take gusts into the mid 20’s both days. From that, we can extrapolate average speeds of at least low 20’s (those ensembles tend to run a little low on speeds). Temps should be in the 80’s. That sounds darn pleasant! Greater model spread is present on Monday, so let’s leave this here for now. Looks like a great weekend to spend in the Gorge!

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: with cool weather in the forecast for at least a few days, it’s a great time to get more seeds in the ground. It’s also a great time to plant. Plants like cool weather. But maybe wait until after today’s windstorm, because plants don’t like nuking westerlies any more than you do! Those of you planting sweet potatoes (yes, you can grown them in the lowlands here) will want to plant those slips like you plant tomatoes – deep. Bury them up to their last set of leaves. They’ll make lots of roots, and lots of roots make for healthy plants that make lots of sweet potatoes. Happy gardening.
