Gorge Wind Forecast

Big news today! The water temperature briefly crested 50F yesterday. Add that to the daytime high temps over the next week, and you’ll have 100+. Time to get on it! Remember that the water is still quite cold, and you are likely out of shape for your favorite wind sport. Keep an eye on your buddies, and consider a PFD until you assess your current fitness level.

For Tuesday, we start with pressures of 30.29/30.23/30.20 and gradients of .06 and .03. Stay close to home. As high pressure builds inland, we’ll see westerlies pick up to 12-15, perhaps a touch more, from Stevenson to Mosier. East of there: 5-10 to start and calm by midday. River flow yesterday was 108-139kcfs, river temp is 49.64F, and high temp forecast is 68F. Wednesday kicks off with E 15 at Rooster and E 10 at Cascade Locks. The wind briefly goes calm midday. We’ll have an evening thermal at 13-16 or so from Stevenson to Mosier. With strong offshore high pressure, that wind could overperform by a few mph. High temp: 78F under high overcast sky.

Thursday will be calm in the morning. Widespread easterlies arrive in the afternoon; you’ll find E 10-15 from Rooster to Viento with E 5-10 to the east. High temp: upper 70’s under high overcast sky. Easterlies pick up to 30-40 on Friday with temps near 80. Saturday brings a round of moderate westerlies (probably) with temps pushing 80F. Sunday continues to look like a big west wind day. The question right now is “where?”. Previous runs had the strongest wind in the Corridor. This latest forecast has the strong wind out east. So, let’s wait and see!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No snow to talk about in this forecast, at least through Saturday! Tuesday will be mostly sunny with scattered high clouds. The free air freezing level starts at 8000′ and rises to 10,000′. Wind N 10-20 in the morning, W 5 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. Wednesday will be high overcast. The FAF will be 10,000′ during the day and 11,000′ after midnight. Wind: light/variable in the morning, WNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight. Thursday will be high overcast then partially high overcast then clear overnight. The FAF will be 11,000′ in the morning and will rise to 13,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: NW 15-20 in the morning, E 15-20 in the afternoon, and SE 15-25 overnight. The next chance of anything different is Sunday, when strong westerlies return, the freezing level drops well below 5000′, and a few flurries are possible. We’ll have to wait for the models to settle before we have the exact details. Bookmark this forecast, because the Mt. Hood snow forecast is going to take a couple days off.

Cycling

There’s going to be a lot of brown pow out there this week. Go get it! Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. It’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
