Gorge Wind Forecast

While we’re starting the day (it’s Thursday) with westerlies, you’d better get on it if that’s what you want. We’ll be switching to east wind this afternoon and holding on to it through Friday. A calm start on Saturday gives way to a very warm, moderately windy westerly afternoon. Sunday: still looking like a bigger westerly day, but the details still aren’t clear. I’m on call 7pm tonight to 7pm Friday, so I’ll do my best to either get a forecast out tonight or tomorrow morning!

Before I forget, I’ll mention this: Big Winds is looking for people to join their team. This is a great place to work. Here’s what they say, “You’ll be surrounded by like-minded friends, and a “job” that’s all about sharing your passion — it feels good, and perhaps, noble. No, we’re not curing cancer, but to help people better enjoy their free time, and return to the beach better people than when they hit the water – that’s a fun dynamic to be part of.” I agree! You’ll also get access to the latest and greatest E-Bike and wind gear, you’ll meet tons of cool customers, and you’ll be part of a family. Whether you’re young and passionate or coming out of retirement to share your stoke, you’d be a welcome member of the team. Get more deets at their employment page.

Thursday kicks off with pressures of 30.17/30.09/30.11 for gradients of .08 and .02. If the models are right, you can go ahead and ignore that; we’re switching to easterlies this afternoon. You’ll find calm wind midday. As the center of the high pressure shifts inland, easterlies pick up to 15ish from Rooster to Viento with 5-10 to the east. River flow yesterday was 123-127kcfs, river temp is 50F (finally!), and high temp forecast is 76F with decreasing clouds. Friday sees the heat low over the west side, and that’ll keep the easterlies going. The day starts with 50ish degrees and 30-35 at Rooster. Stevenson will be 20-25 to start. That wind holds through midday and then fades in the afternoon. We end the day with 15-20 at Rooster and 10-15 at Stevenson. Saturday starts calm and warm. As a weather system approaches the coast mid-morning, westerlies pick up to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dales and then shift to 17-21 from Mosier to The Dalles mid-afternoon. At that point, areas west of Mosier drop to 12-15 or so. We’re still looking at a 15-20 degree temps drop and westerlies at 28-32 on Sunday, but the quality/location keeps shifting. So… wait and see!

Cycling

There’s going to be a lot of brown pow out there this week. Go get it! Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
