Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Sunday, everyone! It’s not an ideal setup today (you can tell by the convective debris overhead), but it’s also not anything to shake a stick at. We’ll have solid (but gusty) westerlies today. Lesser westerlies stick around Monday all day and Tuesday morning before fading on Tuesday afternoon. Very unstable air is forecast Wednesday and Thursday, and that instability will be surface-based. This does not bode well for wind sports, but it bodes well for storm chasing!

Before I forget… Cider Fest is happening at the HOod River waterfront today. It’s a zoo down there. Consider recreating elsewhere.

Let’s look at Sunday morning. It’s the first Sunday I’ve slept in since the beginning of ski season, and that sure does feel good! We start off with pressures of 29.96/29.84/29.76 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.08. First impression says you’ll want to be between Mosier and Rufus today. Looking at the wind speeds to start, we have showery single digits in Stevenson, teens to The Dalles, and low 20’s out east. Models insist that (despite offshore low pressure and an incoming weak front) we’ll have gusty 26-30 this afternoon between Lyle and Arlington with 17-21 from Viento to Mosier. Stevenson will probably stay in the 9-13 range today. Let’s pick this apart a little. Instability tends to result in lesser wind speeds than models predict, as do offshore low pressure systems and incoming frontal systems. So, if the deterministic model calls for 28-32 (it does today), we can knock it down some. Maybe even to the 24-28 range instead of 26-30. Also note that the wind will probably be “the wrong direction” wherever you go. It’ll be gusty. So what. Have fun anyway! River flow yesterday was 131-187kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 66F. One last thing – if you are headed out east today, consider stopping at Amayah’s Indian food cart in Biggs. It’s absolutely stellar. It’s located just east of Biggs by the giant Tire Service sign.

Let’s look at Monday and hope the forecast takes less words. We’ll have marine clouds in the west and high clouds all over the place. This post-frontal morning starts with 10-13 from Stevenson all the way to Arlington. Stay near the Corridor. Midday wind out east falls to 7-10 and then rebounds to 11-14. From Stevenson to Doug’s, westerlies settle in at 15-18 or so. Perhaps a touch more. High temp: 64F.

It’s possible wraparound moisture could affect us on Tuesday. Afternoon instability almost certainly will. We see this reflected in the current deterministic run: dawn patrol at 17-21 from Stevenson to Mosier with calm wind to the east. As Mother Nature shakes things up in the afternoon, the wind turns either calm or light westerly and perhaps rebounds at 7-10 late. High temp: 78F, muggy, and high overcast.

Looking at Wednesday and Thursday, you might as well ignore the deterministic models. There a lot of chatter in the ensembles. More importantly, there’s a LOT of atmospheric instability, and that instability is surface-based. You’ll be better served chasing storms than you will be chasing wind! That’s it for today. Have a fabulous day on the river!

Cycling

There’s going to be a lot of brown pow out there this week. Go get it! Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
