Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Snow is not what’s in the forecast today for Mt. Hood (it’s Monday), but we should see enough snow to refresh the snow surface on Tuesday. A little snow on Wednesday competes with the strong April sun for the right to dictate snow surface quality. Enough sun sticks around through Friday to (most likely) transform the snow to corn and spring skiing for the warm weekend.

Monday, however, will be drizzly all day on the mountain. The rain switches to snow overnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 2500′ around 11pm, and down to 1500′ after midnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” rain is forecast today as the bulk of the precip falls to the west. In the rain-snow transition period, about 0.2” water equivalent (WE) falls. The mountain then picks up about 0.2” WE snow overnight for a couple inches of new atop the wet snowpack. Wind will be SSW 15-30 this morning, SW 30-50 this afternoon, WNW 20-25 this evening, and WSW 25-30 after midnight.

Tuesday will be snowy and then intermittently snowy with a shot at a period of sunshine in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” WE is forecast during the day for 4-5” new snow. Overnight, up to 0.2” WE is forecast for a couple inches more. Wind: WSW 25-30 early, WSW 30-40 mid-morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and S 5-10 after midnight.

Wednesday starts with a little snow and then turns sunny. Orographic flurries are possible in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. Prior to the sun taking over, about 0.1” WE falls, for an inch of morning snow. Get it early. The sun will warm and transform the snow quickly. Wind: S 5-10 in the morning, NW 10 in the afternoon, and NW 20-25 in the evening and overnight.

Sunshine is forecast on Thursday morning with clouds in the afternoon. Friday through Sunday will probably be dry and will probably be warmer than it’s been all season. Sunday’s probably the warmest day, and will likely have some sort of spring skiing. That said, models are still all over the place on just how warm it will get. So we’ll keep an eye on it. Models then hint at more snow to start next week!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Monday starts out calm, gray and drizzly. If you want wind, you should be able to find some later. Somewhat stronger, gusty westerlies are forecast on Tuesday. Wednesday maxes out in the “moderate zone”. Models suggest westerlies at 0-10 this morning all through the Gorge. As this system starts to push inland, the wind picks up to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River (with rain) and evening picks up to gusty 17-21 from Stevenson to Boardman (with rain). River flow readings are 81-129kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 56F. Tuesday starts out calm and drizzly in the western Gorge with gusty 15-18 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-28 from The Dalles to Boardman for a few hours before dropping back to gusty 18-23. High temp: 49F. Wednesday starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge. We’ll see a slow and steady build to 17-21 from Stevenson to Arlington in the afternoon. High temp: 50F. With building offshore high pressure, reality could exceed the forecast.

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
