Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today could be our last fresh-snow day of the season on Mt. Hood unless something dramatic happens in the extended forecast. After today, the weather turns warm and sunny, and full-on spring skiing arrives. Looking at Monday, ti’s snowing. The mountain picked up about 3” of snow overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning and 3000′ this afternoon. Temps slowly warm overnight and set us up for 0C all the way up to 8000′ after midnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today. That’ll give us 2-3” additional snow thanks to orographic assistance; the NW wind will wring every little bit of moisture out of the atmosphere. Wind: WNW 30-40 this morning, NW 20-30 this afternon, and W 5-10 overnight. Tuesday will be sunny. The free air freezing level rises from 0′ in the mornign to 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind: W 5-10 in the morning. NW 10-15 in the afternoon. Light/variable overnight. Wednesday will be sunny and dry all day. The free air freezing level starts at 10,000′ and rises to 11,000′ after midnight as 850mb temps rise from +10C to +12C – that’s over 50 degrees F! Ditto on Thrusdya – warm and sunny with temps in the 50’s with light/variable wind building to E 20 overnight. Sunny, warm weather sticks around through Saturday. We then tumble into uncertainty for Sunday, so we’ll leave this here for now. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

One or two days of westerlies to start the week succumb to the power of a high pressure ridge and 70-something weather. But wait… there’s a decent chance of a big day on Sunday and perhaps Monday. Starting with Monday, we kick it off with 30.07/30.01/29.93 for pressures of .06 and .08. If I had to hazard from those pressures as I sit here on this drizzly morning, I’d guess you’ll be heading somewhere between Lyle and Rufus. Indeed… The day starts with westerlies at 15-20 from Rufus to Arlington and 5-10ish to the west. Viento always overperforms when there’s a front moving through; it’s at 20-25. Let the rain die off. That’ll happen late morning. After that, you’ll find 12-15 west of The Dalles and 22-25 from Avery (or perhaps Lyle) to Rufus. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier, will pick up to 14-17 this afternoon as the clouds burn back more. River flow readings yesterday were 113-161kcfs, river temp is 49F, and high temp forecast is 57F. Tuesday starts with westerlies at 7-10 or less all through the Gorge. We should see at least 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon with calm wind to the east. As the offshore ridge tilts positive, the wind will get gusty and perhaps drop. High temp: 67F. Wednesday will be calm, then E 10-15 near Stevenson and Viento, and then W 10-13 from Cascade Locks to Viento in the afternoon. High temp: low to mid 70’s. All the model clusters hint at a marine push on Sunday. If that holds, we’ll see a very big west wind day. Fingers crossed!

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
