Gorge Wind Forecast

Another round of easterlies is in the cards for Monday, and then it’s back to west wind for a few days. Models aren’t predicting massive amounts of wind, but those of you who can make the most of 20ish mph will be getting on the river.

If you want the easterlies on Monday, you’ll need to jump on it; they won’t last long. You’ll find 15-20mph from Rooster to Viento until 11am or noon, after which they’ll fade. By 2pm, the wind should be calm all through the Gorge. River flow readings are 63-87kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 88F.

Tuesday starts out totally calm. An offshore low pushes some marine air into the metro area in the afternoon, and this nudges wind speeds upward. By noon or so, we’ll have west wind at 16-19 between Stevenson and Hood River. Early afternoon speeds rise to 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River and then spread from Stevenson to Avery for the Executive Session. High temp: 86F.

Wednesday starts off with deep marine clouds and drizzle in the western Gorge. Westerlies respond by dropping to the “light” range under the clouds and 13-16mph east of The Dalles where it’ll probably be sunny. Afternoon wind rises to 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier and gusty 17-21 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 71F.

Thursday’s forecast is currently 18-22, but you’ll probably have to go to the eastern Gorge to get it; drizzle could continue, and it could even shift a bit farther east. Models don’t agree on this. Friday’s forecast is currently light/variable. Let’s hold off on the weekend for now, as the details are, according to NWS “fuzzy”. Have a great week!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Thursday brings a showing of the bike movie “Reset” at River City at 8pm. The Post and Pint will shift to 5pm to accommodate this. The movie is free, and there’s a raffle to benefit the HRATS.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
