Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate westerlies stick around all weekend. They’re followed by easterlies Monday and the first half of Tuesday. Westerlies are likely, but not guaranteed, to return on Tuesday evening. If they do, they could be quite strong, and will stay strong through Wednesday. Kiteboard 4 Cancer (open to all the wind sports now!) will be at the Hood River Event Site today through Sunday. Launching and landing of all wind vehicles is limited to participants. The event itself is open to all, and Taqueria La Vaquita (from Mosier) will be there for you to buy some really amazing tacos.

Friday starts off with light westerlies and moderate gradients. The light wind holds through late morning and then begins to build. Midday wind rises to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles and keeps building. From mid-afternoon on, you’ll be zipping around the river with 19-22 from Stevenson to Avery with 13-16 at Rufus. East of there: not much at all. River flow readings are 165-232kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 79F.

A weak front approaches the coast on Saturday and interferes with wind quality. Desert heat helps with wind strength. It’s likely the steadiest/strongest conditions will be east of the Cascade Crest, but don’t let that stop you from playing in the Corridor. The day starts light. By mid-morning, westerlies rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Westerlies slowly build to 20-23 by 2pm from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 at Rufus. Desert heat amps up late afternoon and drives the wind up to 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington with a couple caveats: the wind is likely to be less at Swell, perhaps 19-22. The wind is likely to be quite gusty from Lyle to Doug’s. Still, all-in-all, it’ll be a great day to get on the river. High temp forecast is 78F with a relatively muggy period in the afternoon.

A bit more consistency is forecast on Sunday. The day starts with post-frontal westerlies at 10-13 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Westerlies slowly and steadily ramp up to 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Rufus: 12-15. East of there: light westerlies. High temp: 81F.

Moderate easterlies are forecast all day Monday and for the first half of Tuesday. Models are hinting that an approaching trough will limit heating in the metro area on Tuesday afternoon. If this happens, we have a good shot at an evening of strong westerlies between Stevenson and Mosier. Watch that closely, cuz I sure am! Wednesday: very windy. Have a great weekend!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is Kiteboard for Cancer at the Hood River Event Site. The Oregon 12/24 hour mountain bike race takes place in Bend this weekend.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
