Gorge Wind Forecast

High pressure built inland faster than expected last night, and this morning’s gradients (and wind) are lackluster. By the afternoon, we’ll have shifted to an east wind pattern, and that will continue through the weekend. Hot weather joins with the easterlies. Remember that the Hood River Bridge will be closed through Sunday. Looking for more wind? Try the coast for strong northerlies and a long-period SW swell.

Friday started with weak gradients of 0.03 (pdx-dls) and 0.02 (dls-psc). Those will continue to decrease and then should turn easterly this afternoon. Light and variable wind starts the day. Midday easterlies pick up to 10-15mph from Rooster to Viento. Those dip back to 10mph in the afternoon, and light easterlies at 5mph or less pick up east of Viento. River flow is 326-389kcfs, river temp is 58F, and high temp forecast is 81F.

Hot weather settles in along the coast and western Oregon on Saturday, and that drives stronger east wind. The day starts with 30-35 near Rooster Rock with 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento. After noon, the wind drops to 20-25 at Rooster, 15-20 from Stevenson to Viento. It picks up to E 10-15 east of Viento to Arlington. High temp: 89F.

Early morning temp gradients drive easterlies on Sunday, but the wind backs off in the afternoon as the heat equalizes across the Cascades. Morning wind will be 30-35 at Rooster and 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento. In the afternoon, the wind drops to 10-15 from Rooster to Viento and picks up to 5-10 east of Hood River. Near Hood River, the wind will be E 0-5mph. High temp: 94F.

Models are hinting that a weather disturbance will turn the wind onshore on Monday afternoon. It could also be accompanied by significant atmospheric instability. This is not the way out of the heat wave that you were looking for, but it will return the westerlies. That said, Monday’s high temps will top out in the mid to upper 90’s. After that: back to a more consistent west wind pattern.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Coming up this weekend, there’s the Adventure Van Expo both days at the Hood River Fairgrounds. Gorge Pride takes place in The Dalles on Sunday from 9am to 6pm at Ft. Dalles Memorial Park.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! All the 44 Road trails are open. Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open, but Ape Canyon trail has received no maintenance this year. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
