9/3 Gorge wind and events

First thing today, I’d like to say thank you to all of you who donated during August pledge drive month. There was never a day where I didn’t post a forecast, because every day someone donated. Thank you to all of you both for using this forecast and for supporting it! Remember that although it’s free for you to use, it’s not free for me. I put a lot of time into giving you an accurate forecast, and I pay for the hosting on this website. If you find it valuable, please take the time to make a donation to support what I do. Your generosity helps keep this going for everyone. I also send an email version of this forecast. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No more dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive, and you’ll also have a chance to win prizes from the sponsors. Thank you again for your support!

This week’s sponsor is Dirt Hugger, offering curbside food waste collection service for your business, school, office, store, restaurant or hospital in Hood River and The Dalles. All that food waste becomes awesome compost for your garden, yard, farm or vineyard. You can pick up that compost or have it delivered. If we as a society can’t make composting happen through our cities and counties, at least we can make it happen through a cool local business. This is one of my favorite businesses in the Gorge. Support them, please

The wind gods must love the Cross-Channel swimmers; despite a .06 gradient this morning, it’s only blowing 5-10 or less in Hood River. It will pick up, but hopefully not until the swimmers are done with the swimming thing. We’ll see a slow rise in the wind as the sun rises in the sky, with windspeeds topping out in the 16-19 range near Hood River and Stevenson, picking up out at Doug’s and Rowena late in the afternoon.

For tomorrow, Local’s Day, we’ll see a great day for SUPing and waterskiing near Hood River, before afternoon easterlies at 3-7 near Hood River and 13-15 near Stevenson ruffle the glassy pond. Wednesday brings more low-teen east wind. If that doesn’t sound great to you, Wind Johnnie, today, tomorrow, and Wednesday all look very windy at the coast, with a 5-7 foot swell.

If any of you have gotten a flat tire due to tacks when riding your bike along Dee Highway in the last few days, please call the Hood River County Sheriff’s office non-emergency line and file a report. They’re actively seeking the person who’s been tossing the tacks in the bike lane, and they need your reports of damage to help prosecute, if and when they catch this person. If you were wondering, the charge could be either criminal mischief or vandalism.

On a more positive note, we’re three days in to the bike commute challenge. Sign up for team Gorge Owned at bikecommutechallenge.com to win great prizes from local businesses.

Have an awesome day today!

It looks like we’ll see another windy Gorge day today, but a passing weak weather system (high clouds are a good sign of this) is going to make it gusty on the river and windy in the upper valley, so wind johnnies and cyclists beware. Yesterday, by the way, there was zero wind in Odell and Parkdale and the road cycling was lovely. Anyway, expect westerlies today at 19-22 near Hood River this morning, filling in from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon, and possibly picking up into the teens further east.

Labor Day starts off with westerlies at 15-18 at the Hatchery and 10-15 near Hood River, holding in the 13-15 range all day long. Tuesday brings one last puff of west wind in the morning before the flow turns offshore, giving us light easterlies in the Gorge.

If you are a road cyclist, be aware that some asshole has been dumping hundreds of tacks in the bike lanes along Dee Highway, between Tucker Park and Dee. Cyclists have been sweeping the tacks off the road, but it appears that someone has been repeating the mischief. So, if you’re cycling Dee Highway, or anywhere else in the Gorge, and see a pile of tacks in the bike lane, please call the Sheriff’s non-emergency line and report it. And if you happen to catch the license plate of the vehicle driven by the person doing this, that would also be appreciated by everyone.

For events today, it is the final multi-sport swap meet of the season, brought to you by the Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association. If you want to pick up some new gear or get rid of some old gear, head down to Hood River’s Expo Center Parking lot between 8am and noon today. Swap meets aren’t just for shopping – they’re a great place to catch up with friends and feel like you’re part of the community.

Also today, there’s touch rugby in Mosier at 3pm. And then, coming up tomorrow, it’s the annual Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim, where hundreds of swimmers jump from the Sternwheeler in the middle of the Columbia and swim back to Oregon.

Have an awesome day today!
